AR slings, need some options

Well this last weekend i got my AR out on its first coyote tournament. I carried it on the shoulder most of the time like it was just a tool for the job /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Well needless to say after a day and half of straight hunting and carrying the gun i would like to look into slings. It is a 24" bull .204 with a ACE Skel stock.

Just wondering if you guys have any idea for a sling. The sling bolt for the hand guard is straight down as is the sling bolt in the stock. I know i can move them to the side but dont really want to put new holes in her. Just wondering what some of you AR guys are doing for slings. Particularly ones with sling bolts on the bottom of the gun. Also wondering if there is a two strap or back pack type sling maybe military?

I know I know the gun is heavy but I am still young enough to handle the weight /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

One of the problems with the AR design is that it doesn't allow for use of the more comfortable slings designed for heavy rifles. I had a machinest buddy make a rear sling stud adapter for my A2 buttstock to replace the standard loop. Now I use a heavily padded suede rifle sling with quick detach swivels front and rear. This summer my RRA varmint will probably be wearing a Quake Claw sling with the Hush Stalker swivels.

I like the Claw slings on a AR. The neoprene slings seem to be a little too stretchy for the weight of the AR. I use a standard Claw on my heavier 25 WSSM, and the contoured Claw on my lighter .223. These slings stays put well and distribute the weight well. I was a little sceptical on the swivels that come with them but they seem to work so far and are quiet.

I found this at DPMS from KNS for the rear A2 stock so you can use the quick detach slings on the AR. It has a 4 way hole so you can attached front to rear or side. If you have the front stud on your handguard you can use a standard rifle sling.

I use a 2 point tactical sling that goes over my 'strong' shoulder and under my 'weak' armpit with a slip clip that causes the rifle to ride diagonally across my chest with the muzzle down.

This keeps the weight in close and gives good support and still allows the rifle to be quickly accessible and is really handy for climbing into a tree stand or up a hill..

I think it's a "BlackHawk" but they don't list it anymore'

I used several before I settled on this one from DSG Arms: BFG sling

I use small sections of paracord from the HK hooks to the sling points on my carbine. I do have it attached via an ACE rail sling point in front & other end tied to the Magpul CTR style stock. Has worked great for me, quiet, comfortable, easy to adjust, but it is on my 16" carbine. As I have gotten older, weapon weight is important to me. If I have to hump it a long way, the lighter the better. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Forgot to add, sling easily detaches because of the metal HK hooks. Just leave the small parachute cord loops attached to your rifle, then you can re-attach in seconds. The sling then has a cuff that slides over the hooks to keep everything silent & in place.

I have the KNS rear sling mount on my Bushmaster A2 stock. I use Uncle Mike's Super Swivels attached to a Butler Creek Comfort Stretch sling. It makes the rifle much easier to carry in the field.

ACE sling swivel in the top/forward position and this KNS sling stud that replaces your front pivot pin. My 20" fluted bull barrel balances pretty fair, you're going to have a lot of muzzle weight with a 24" bull barrel. Blue Force Gear Vicker's 2-point sling with all the adapters removed and you've got a nice setup. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I used the old Boonie Packer slings that you can find at gunshows for about $5. Remove the inner-plastic tubing and you have a hands free out front across the chest, muzzle up/down or behind the back settup. Leaves hands free for calling or packing out game etc. This settup will also provide you with both hand availability and still have a ready rifle for a quick swing around jump shots.

I carry my AR for miles in prairie country. I just added a Fastex snap (just like a backpack waist buckle system) to my K-Wal-Mart slings that allows me to quickly lengthen and tighten the sling. If i've crawled to a spot for a shot (i'm a spot and stalk hunter), and the rig is tightened to my body i just unsnap the buckle without having to contort my body to get it off. Also allows for quick adjustment for over the opposite shoulder carrying. Cheap and simple. Be sure and sew up the end of the webbing so it doesn't slip thru the snap.
