AR10 or M1A

I can not decide on what I want to get I am looking at getting an M1A super match or 10SBF to shoot out to about 900 to 1000 meters it is mainly going to be for competing with it.

What would you guys get.

Having owned several of both I would say AR-10 without a doubt. If you are talking stock box guns the ar-10 is much more accurate and has less muzzle jump which will give you a faster follow-up shot. I'm not knocking the M1a they are great guns but I think the ar-10 is better.

Also my armalite ar-10t was the most accurate factory stock semi-auto I have owned. My DPMS shot better than .5 moa as well. I haven't seen that from many m1a's.

M1A was great in it's day.
It is not competitive today and always required a lot of maintenance.
When it was the standard in competition the saying was that you needed three;
one to shoot,
one spare,
and one in the hospital(in repair at the gunsmiths).

The Tubb 2000 is probably the most competitive rifle today with the AR close behind.

The M1A is still a great gun today. I have both and M1A-NM and an AR-10. Both are great guns but without a doubt my M1A shoots better than the AR-10 at 1000 yards. What do you mean it is high maintenance? I have shot hundrends of rounds through my M1A during competition without cleaning, with no ill effects to the gun or it's accuarcy. The cleaning I do on the M1A is esentialy the same as the AR-10.

I am a big M1/M1A fan but there are certain issues which need addressing.

It is quite easy to scope a flat-top AR10. The M1A requires a 'good' scope mount that is not cheap (the not-good ones come loose). Now most competition with M1A's uses iron sights (NRA highpower bullseye etc.) so that may not be an issue for you. Conversely a flat-top AR10 may require buying pricey iron sights (good 1 MOA click-adjustable ones).

The AR10 does not have a stock bedding issue. This is the one big bugaboo for a competition rifle that fires a lot of rounds. The M1A/M14 action has a small recoil lug bedding surface (smaller than the M1 rifle) and generally needs to be re-glass-bedded every season or more for a high-volume shooter (this is the major source of the extra-rifles comments by Jack Roberts).

The trigger on an M1A can be made quite crisp and manageable at 4.5 pounds pull. But, an AR10 might have available replacement trigger units that can go way under that weight.

Magazine cost is another issue, not sure what AR10 mags cost but GI M14 mags might be available for under $30.

AR10's can be made sub-MOA from the factory. An M1A Super Match factory rifle might cost quite a bit more than such an AR10 (I'm not sure). If you buy a mil-spec M1A and try to build a match rifle out of it, you'll A) be lucky to get 1 MOA or better accuracy and B) swallow your tongue at the cost.

That said, I hate the feel of AR's and love the feel of M1's and M1A/M14's. (Now THAT'S a RIFLE!!)

I can't compare the two directly, sorry. But I will say that my DPMS .308B shot 7/16" groups @ 100yds my second trip out with cheap HSM BTHP's.
