ar10 vs ar15 lower

when do you have to use a ar10 lower instead of ar15? looking to build a 243 ar gun. Do I start with ar10 lower or can I use the ar15. Does plum crazy make an ar10 lower? I do not reload so will be using factor ammo. But that may change. Any advise would help.

In a 243 it will be the AR10/308 platform and you will need a AR10/AR308 lower of some sort. They each have different standards so make sure you can mix and match before buying, it's not standardized like the AR-15. Most of the guts are AR-15 guts in an the AR10/308. There are lots of 6mm calibers that will fit on a AR-15 platform, but the standard 243 will not.

I like the DPMS style ar-10. Its not completely standardized like jspencer said but there are a ton of options for em!

And Magpul makes mags for 'em.

That is reason enough for me.

It's my understanding there are two different lower patterns. The DPMS and Armalite. Both the DPMS and the Armalite have been around before the 1994 large capacity magazine ban. (assault weapons ban under Clinton) However, Armalite changed their lower pattern to use modified high capacity M-14 magazines. This is called the Gen II lower by Armalite.

I understand that Armalite, Noveski, Eagle and Aeroprecision (new AR10 lower) follow the Gen II pattern and several other makers follow the DPMS pattern. Unfortunately, Magpul does not make mags for the Gen II pattern. As far as I know, only Armalite and maybe Noveski is making the Gen II magazine. I have not heard of anyone else making them. kwg
