AR15 Scope mount opinions

I have read that some people have issues with getting the scope high enough on the AR flat top to shoot comfortably and be able to operate the charging handle. I am going to mounting a Simmons 44mag (44mm objective) scope on my AR and was wondering what your opinions would be. I am torn between getting the 1" riser below and then putting weaver low mounts on that.

The other option is a one piece solid mount as below. The description for this mount says for scopes up to 50mm obj. This would not be as high but in theory should be more solid than the riser and rings. Sorry for the bad pic.

Obviously I am open to other ideas/opinions.

Thanks for any help

Cody, I would stick with the one piece mount, less tension screws/contact points might reduce the chance of something coming loose. Plus I think it makes for a cleaner setup.

Millette makes specialty rings that are extra high just for AR's. I don't have any personal experience with them but I have heard the a nice. I will be trying a set on my next AR

I just put the millette rings on mine, no problems. The only down side is the charging handle is hard to get to. Just had to change my ways a little. These are for flat tops and I think I paid about 25-30$ for them. Figured if I didn't like them I wasn't out too much.

kfallscody i just bought warne ultra high rings that were designed especially for the ar's.they are a little pricy but real nice.goodluck

I got the Armalite one piece. The front ring leans forward allowing the scope to go ahead. It looks clean without stacking and is strong.

for proper cheek weld on an A2 stock, the center of scope should be approx 3.5" above center of barrel, size of scope really doesn't matter. I like the extra high rings or the 1 piece mounts.

Here is a pic of the Armalite mount with a Leupold 3.5-10x50mm scope mounted for comparison. The most important thing to me is getting the scope far enough forward, I can't do that with rings. This mount is solid as a rock and will return to zero close enough.

Thank you all for the information. The choice seems obvious enough to me.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I just placed the order for the Armalite one-piece mount and a few mags while I was at it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have the Armalite 1 pc. mount as well. It makes a really nice looking setup and installs/removes easily! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have the Armalite 1 piece and the ARMS 2 piece and like them both.

I have the Badger Ordanance charging handle 'tactical' latch on all of my AR's

As Tom 64 mentioned, the problem with AR flat tops is getting the scope far enough forward to give proper eye relief. I have the super high Millets on mine right now and I can suffer through the problems with eye relief, but if I had to do it all new, I would go with something that allowed the scope to move farther forward than the standard rings-on-receiver like the Millet.

I am having an upper built with a special scope base that extends past the end of the receiver for eye relief, and also has a 15 degree down angle to allow long range shooting with the scope in the middle of its adjustment range. It is specifically for high power, 4-gun 600 yard matches but that extended scope base is what I would use on a varmint upper, too.
