AR15 sight in

Unlike my bolt guns, I cant use my laser bore sighter on my AR because of the birdcage. you cant bore sight by eye so what is the easiest/best way to do this job ?

personally I use a magnetic bore site to get close. then I lock it in a vise and shoot one round at 25 yards then I move the cross hair to my bullet hole and shoot again. If I hit my aim point at 25 I move to 100 yards and shoot 3 rounds and adjust. I can usually get sighted in with less than 10 rounds. There might be better ways to do it, but that is how I do it for both my bolt guns and my AR's.

Ran into this problem when I built first AR and this is how I solved the problem.

Since I had one AR which was already sighted in, used Rock Knocker's method below; bore sighted the old AR on proper size bull on wall across the room, then drew the crosshairs on target to coincide w/that zero, which resulted in the cross hair printing 1" above center of the bull (approx. 30' from vise to target).

Put new upper in vise, bore sighted on target and adjusted scope to duplicate the old rifle's zero. That put me on paper @ 100 yds.

May be better solution but worked for me.

I usually just spin off the muzzle device.

Another option is to use a chamber-inserted laser bore-sighter.

Looking down the barrel works as good as anything, but my eyes suck.

In the last several years, I really haven't been too reliant upon boresighting anyway. I optically center the scope, mount it, the distance to account for 100yrds of drop and the height of the scope over the bore line, then take a shot at 50yrds. I'm always on paper. Dial to where I think a 100yrd zero would be at 50yrds, take another shot to confirm, then move out to 100.

THIS ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^

No need for a boresighter or other stuff. I've mounted scopes on 5 ARs and was always on paper at 25 yards. It's easy to go to 100 yards+ after that.

Yes you can bore sight it by eye.
Just take the upper off and BCG out and set it on a set of bags.
I bore sight all my gas guns at 36 yds which will get you within a few inches at 100.

I don't have my 223 lazer cartridge right here (My kid has it), I have 4 different lazer cartridges that I chamber in my rifles and it shoots the lazer right out the end of the barrel onto my target for bore sighting. I do this at 25 yards and the guns are pretty close at 100 yards to do the final adjustments. This setup works great for us in our AR's. Note, all my sight ins with the lazer are in a 100 meter indoor underground rifle range, so the lazer shows up very bright on my targets. I have tried this at our outdoor range and it is hard to see the lazer in the daylight.

I'm with Rock Knocker's approach, put sand bags on the kitchen table, pick an unsuspecting neighbors house and match up your bore with the optic. If you're wife asks you why you're shooting at the neighbor just say "because he didn't wave at me on the street today."

I use a standard ol laser pointer through the barrel to make a spot on the wall on the other side of the house. Hold the upper in a cleaning vise and good to go. Works for me but a bit clunky

I just bore sighted a new AR yesterday as well as a 7mm-08 and a .243. Pull bolt, rest on bags, find target through barrel, match scope picture. Fine tune. Of course as the day progressed we got 25mph winds all over the place so make sure to note that. Good luck!

Get a cartridge specific bore sighter that goes into your chamber. The other ways can work, at least to get you into the ball park.

Well I gotter done!!
tongue_smilie.gif

Went to the range after looking down the bore and what I thought was close.
Asked for the 25 yd and was told I could not use it with .223 only Pistols and .22 Rimfire.
So at the fifty yard I put up a 12" target over others that were left and proceeded to take my first shot out of this new rifle(forgot to close the bolt) and Bang and I searched all over that Target and could not see a hole, So a second shot and Miss!! With all the other targets I couldn't tell where I was hitting.

So I got up and started looking around for something small as a Target and bingo found a spent shotgun shell and a stick to put it on. Then at Cease fire I went down to the berm behind and shoved that stick in the berm between lanes.

When at the firing line and went hot I asked the RO to be my spotter. so long story short after 2 rounds and adjusting I hit real close to the shell then finished on my 12 " Target hitting.5 low, Then after another 30 rounds I put up a clean Target at 100 yds and slipped in a new 10 round mag for a group and slow fire put 4 in the 10 ring and 6 in the 9 ring. I was more than Happy and the Shell Catcher sold by Reb8600 caught all the cases except one that fell on the table, The RO thought it was a neat piece of equipment.
Thanks Guys for your support......Jeff

This is how I do it too. Laser bore sight right though the chamber and down the entire length of the barrel out to the target at 25 yards using a bullet type laser devise. I just chamber the laser device in the chamber and adjust the reticles to match the laser on the target with the AR15 strapped down in a lead sled DFT Lead Sled device.

This is the fastest way to zero in a new optical device like a rifle scope or even an EOTech Hallow Graphic Laser Device.

Then fine tune the optics for 50 yard and 200 yard zeros.
