Are Fox Native?

I heard once that the Russians introduced fox to the Aluetian Islands for their fur industry and the fox remain today.
Is this true?
A guy I know was stationed on a remote island at the end of the Aluetians and said that crows and fox were all over the place.
Are fox native to North America or introduced?
Thanks

Actually i just read today that gray fox have always been in American but reds were introduced from early europeans coming over. I got it out of a book so hopefully that info. is valid.

Pine Cone,

Red fox were introduced onto the Aleutian Islands for the fur industry. We've been trying to get rid of them ever since. They are deadly on native geese and almost were the demise of a couple of species. Many islands still have red fox and most likely always will. They are very good at expanding territories in the absence of natural predators (coyotes).

Gray, Kit, Arctic and Swift fox are all native to North America, the red fox was brought here for sport in the 1700's, but some theorize they were here already and Europeans just helped expand thier range.

mikegranger, we have that same problem here with red fox they kill all the natives and there is nothing to kill them other than people, in the last few years their numbers have become really high because of our gun laws a lot of people have stopped shooting them. They have brought back in a bounty of $10 a fox tail for the first and $1 dollar for every one after that its not worth it for me but, by the time i drive there and back i would have wasted more than that in petrol.

Over Kill,

Interesting, here in the States, most red fox hunters are lamenting their decline as coyote ranges continue to expand. I bet a lot of us would love to be in Australia taking care of the problem, if only we could afford it.

I know this should be in the Houndsmen dept but I have heard from a lot of old timer houndsmen that redfox introduction in the East came directly from Europe for sport hunting here. As for the Aluetian Island's, ya got me? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
