Are Primos the same as other calls?

I think the Lil Dog is similar to Crit R Calls. If you look at the shape of the toneboard, air channel and reed and the structure of the moutpiece they look pretty similar. Of course, how much different can all those pieces be? That is my opinion though.

Smithers,
Very good and well thought out posts. Thanks. You will find that the jealousy in this sport often reaches monumental heights. As long as a call maker is perceived as a "little guy" then he is OK. But let him take him dare to take his business into the realm of making a very good living from it, then all of a sudden he is a evil as Wal-Mart.
Will Primos is a good guy from what little I have been around him. But making calls is his business, his livelyhood. He simply showed Randy how they could both profit from joining forces. That is how business is done, if others get their nose bent out of join, I guess that is their problem. Most all businesses take a successful product and tweak it a bit to try and make it better and see if it will sell. So if Dan wants to take it to court he has that option. I personally do not think he can win a case, but that too is the American way. I own Primos calls and like them. I own a bunch of those despised mass production calls from many companies and will probably buy more. Too each his own. I'll leave the rarified air of the "high ground" for others.

PS
I understand that Primos and Randy are coming out with an electronic call. You have not seen moaning, bellyaching, and nitpicking like you will see on the boards when it hits the shelves.

Smithers,

I think that the Red Desert and the Randy call are identical to one another except that the Randy call is a cheap piece of plastic. Regardless of the definition of sellout what Randy did was cheap and not honest. Yes Dan does have permision to make the Weems call and no one else was comercially making when he started. Did I look up to Randy at some point yes I did. Now that he did this to a fellow hunter and call maker I do not. He litterly stabbed Dan in the back after Dan helped him get started. The plain and simple fact was that Randy knew this was going to be an issue since he copied the call. He even went so far as to call it a Turkey call on the patten to avoid patten laws with the already existing Red dessert predator call. Sorry Smithers, Randy did sell out, he chose money over honesty and fairness. He was more concerned about the almighty dollar than he was about maintaining good relationships with those who helped him toware he is now.

As far as Randy copying Dan Thompson... Ask Dan how he feels about that. I imagine he'd be flattered if it really happened.

I'd bet your wrong.

A well thought out post??? Please calling someone jealous. Boy you guys need to grow up a little bit. The plan and simple fact is Randy copied that call and took it right out from a guy who helped him out early on. If you had a great idea and was doing well with than someone with a big name and stole it and competed against you, you would be a little ticked as well. If not whats the point of a patten, or a copy right? What Randy was sleezy. I have no problem with the rest of his calls, but this is different.

I guess from my perspective, as a new caller, I really appreciate several things about the primos calls and the RA videos. I've got probably five of them. The reason I have them and not the others? They're cheaper. Plain and simple. I got a video with a couple calls at Bass Pro on vacation and it ballooned from their. I've had more fun coyote hunting this year than probably any other hunting ever, except when I went with my Grandpa. If I had just gone to the store and bought ACME call without a decent video, I probably wouldn't have a clue what I was doing. When I bought the other videos, I got the impression that Randy really liked those other calls and that he still likes them (see other post above). I got the impression that Randy is a fair guy, down to earth, and honest; likes a good time, and hunts coyotes because he likes to. I credit my interest in coyote hunting to a family friend and to Randy Anderson. Whether he "stole", "copied", "sold out", whatever, the red desert howler, is between him and Dan, I guess. I'd still say that Randy is probably resposible for more predator hunters in the last 10 years than any other person, Primos or no. If you think he copyed it, ask him. He showed up at the shot show and Dan Thompson was there. He must not be too afraid to show his face. As has already been mentioned, most predator calls share a lot of the same features. The Hot Dog mouth piece isn't that much different from the Bill Austin calls Randy also sells. Did he copy those too? They're even plastic, not wood like the Red Desert. As for him selling out, I prefer to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.
