Armadillo

When and how is the best time to hunt this critir? Is the 17hmr ok for this? Where on the body do i aim? Any advise will help me out.
Thanks, Leal /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

yes 17 HMR will do it on armadillo, if they are head on, aim for the head...if not, low on the body behind the front shoulder...As for best time, a wide open field in mid day or night is where I have seen them most. I have never really had them as my target species to hunt. Why are you wanting to hunt them if you don't mind me asking? It is funner to sneak up on them and catch them, then do with them what you want.

Good Luck!!!

I thought they were Texas speed bumps /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I got my dad a youth .22 lever gun and mounted a crossman BB gun laser on it. The wives were complaining about his neighbor and him firing 9mm at 3am. With .22 shorts it's very quiet.

The little suckers are rooting up south and central GA. I hear game-bird ground nests don't hardly have a chance. I also hear they're a carrier of rabies.

You are right, we have them thick even past Macon now. We've shot a few, but they're so dang stupid, a golf club would work just as good, makes for an interesting stalk.

Armadillo, heh, one of the few animals with an open season in Arkansas. I shoot every one I see if I have a weapon handy. They can't see very well, but they can sure jump and run when properly motivated! However, their poor eyesight is usually their downfall. I've stalked more than one and most of the time they will run under something and hide if they see you. However, if you just stand very still, the little bugger will come out in a few minutes. I've shot them with everything from .22LR to .44 magnum, pretty much what I hand on hand.

Where do you shoot them? What ever part of their body is showing. Them and 'possums are the only things I won't sling an arrow at when bow hunting. They are just plain gross. I shot one with my .17hmr a couple weeks back when I was calling raccoons for the first time. Damn 'dillo came rooting up right next to me and scared me half to death. So I shot him. Stupid little things. They give me the willy's they are so gross.

Armadillos- nasty little buggers. Shoot them, arrow them, club them if you see them. I call them the other illegal immigrant. I got drawn into a special hunt this year (recurve only) in Oklahoma at the McAlester Ammo Plant. The first evening I saw and had so many armadillos (9)under my stand I ended up getting out of my stand early. I couldn't hear anything except the armadillos chasing each other around which upset the beavers and they commensed to tail slappin' the rest of the evening. It was a critter party and no big whitetails got the invite.

I believe he means that they ruin property like an illegal alien is a drain on the country, and they are a general pain in the a$$. Much like illegal aliens are.

I have killed them with a 12ga., .44Mag, .22LR, .223, 9mm, 45ACP and .17 HMR. Whatever is closest to the back door. They all work. I usually catch them after dark. Headshots are best. I can usually walk up to within 10 yards or so before they even move. They tear the hell outta my yard and here in Southern GA they are thick!!!

It's almost a sport now!

OK, You know i had a LONG paragraph of things to fire back on.
I erased it, dont realy know what type of illegals r being talked about, i was an illegal, im not anymore, im sure it was just a figure of speach. I kinda take it personal when someone says shot them, arrow them or whatever. Ive tried my best, and feel that i have made a differance in this country. Just sounds like history can repeat itself.
IM DONE!

I have walked up pretty close to them little buggers, IM trying to harvest as many as possible, taxidermy pays $10 per critir. I cant smoke it in the head, i need to go for the body, 17hmr will do it. Just dont want to do much damage.

Leal,
I think you need to drop the chip off your shoulder buddy. TulsaDogMan was making a joke about armadillos moving up from the southwest, much like illegal immigrants.

I refuse to get into a geo-political debate here, but I do have one thing to say. You claim to have come to this country illegally but now are legal and productive. Congratulations and welcome aboard. However, my personal feelings are this: You may be the best guy on the planet, but you have presented yourself in this country like presenting prime rib on a garbage can lid.

With that being said, I would be happy to shoot armadillos with you anytime.

Leal,

I am also an immigrant. I, on the otherhand, came here LEGALLY. So for me, the illegal immigration discussion is an equally hot topic. So send me that paragraph of thing you wanted to say, but you probably don't want to hear what I have to say in return. I call them facts, and I have a list of them that is a lot longer than a paragraph.

I've been fortunate enough to smoke a few dillos while in Deep south Texas hunting waterbugs coming across the border. It helps to pass the time. The dillos are about as smart as the waterbugs. Go to borderwatch.com and you can see some nice size bucks swimming the river and crawling over the fence. You have to be patient though, they are sneaky little bastards. TAKEN OVER TEXAS ONE SLAB AT A TIME.
