Army surplus camo???

Does anyone use Army surplus gear? I have been looking at the army digital pattern, and have also considered the desert camo. I am looking for somthing that will work while sitting along a fenceline, against a round bale, or in the brush. It will always be in the fall when things are dry so I don't want any dark greens or browns. I have seen this gear for very reasonable prices at garage sales and second hand shops. Is it worth using, or should I find myself some ghost prairie, or mossy oak brush?

The purpose of camo is simply to break up your silhouette into different patterns. Most of the things we hunt are colorblind, remember that most hunters used to wear bright red, and still got their game. Yes, and as i pack for elk camp, ... i look on the floor at everything i'm taking and it's all camo, go figure. blue

Pals96, the surplus cammo will work just fine.

Relax a little and don't let the camo marketeers and their victims get the best of you. Don't flop around or fidget too much, consider a face mask or makeup (far more important than the brand of your camo), and gloves - brown jerseys are fine.

I've shot more than one coyote (and deer) while wearing blue jeans, tennies, and a dull flannel shirt. Even more while wearing Carharts and work boots. Sure, camo is better, but your surplus will certainly fit the bill.

The real advantage of all the new "fishing lure" camo patterns is the design of the garment and the fabric used. Warm and dry.

If you can achieve warm and dry by other means and wear the surplus then don't feel an overwhelming need to go drop a bunch of cash on "fishing lure" premium camo.

BTW, hunting around the round bales is a great place, don't forget to look at the top of them cl;osely before approaching. Coyotes and foxes love to dig out a bedding spot on top of them, particularly in areas where they can overlook mouse or rabbit habitat. Might get a chip shot right off the bat.

For those who don't fish I'll explain my use of the term "fishing lure".
Most fishing lures are designed to catch a fisherman and his wallet, not necessarily fish. Or at least they don't catch fish much better than the ones you already own. A lot of the camo patterns have similar success with hunters.

While I admire RealTree and Mossy Oak for their business sense and their ability to make money, I don't believe that you need to buy new camo every time they come up with a new pattern. You are only trying to break up your silhouette, which you can do with about any camo pattern, including military BDU's.

I bought some MultiCam, I saw it mentioned here and looked into it. It's supposed to work about anywhere. Sportsmansguide.com has BDU pants and jackets and hats. So far I've got a boonie hat, jacket, pants and shirt. I plan on getting a heavy coat in it. You can check it out here, be sure and hit the "Images" link to see some pics of it. It really does seem to take on the color of surroundings, when I'm in the car with tan interior it seems to be mostly brown based, but when I get outside it looks greener.

PS: Don't let the prices linked to in the site above scare you, you can find it much cheaper. Natxchez Shooter Supply even has it.
