ATV Question

I bought a Can Am Outlander 800 to help me get to some more coyote hunting areas this fall and winter. My question is I have a short bed dodge pickup and the ATV won't fit in the bed with the tailgate closed, is there something I can do so I can close the tailgate? I tow a bumper pull camp trailer and the tailgate needs to be closed while towing. I thought about building a platform in the bed of the pickup to raise the ATV bumper above the bed rail but I don't want to have the bumper hit the back window of the pickup. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks

Stand it up in you bed and strap it in. Lift the front end up and it will stand on the pull bar, unless you have a 6 pack rack on it. If it has the 6 pack rack you will need so help balancing it when you strap it in.

Run two straps back, usually to the top of nerfbars, and two straps forward, usually from the bottom of the nerfbars. We actually strap two quads standing up in the bed of my truck when we head to the dunes. Just make sure you plug the breather tube coming out of the top of your gas cap.

Any local quad dealer can help you out on how to strap it standing up if you can't figure it out.

Here's a pic of two strapped in so you will kind of have an idea of what I am trying to explain.

Build a set of angled ramps to go in the back of the truck. Set it to about 30 degrees and that should give you enough room to strap it down.

Heck, with that monster 800, just pull the camper with the ATV!

I was thinking the same thing. However, a buddy of mine tells me that the rumor that a Can Am will out pull a Dodge is not true. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

These are awesome I have one for my King Quad and will never use straps again. They can be found at most sporting retailers Bass Pro or Cabelas

I purchased a locking kit from Master lock and the whole thing locks your quad in the bed of the truck. This is a minor investment for a major purchase about 135 bucks

Have a longer draw bar made. I had a machine shop take an old one I had and cut off and weld the part with the ball to a longer heavy walled piece of tubing for $20. If you have a lot of tongue weight with your camper, it may not tow well. You could also tow a small utility behind your camper..

Thanks for all of the ideas, I really like the Louisiana Guard Dog but it will not work while towing the camp trailer. I think I'm going to experiment with some ramps in the front of the pickup bed this weekend, I will let you know if it does not work.

If the tires are not setting on the tailgate, just remove the tailgate or even use an extra strap to close it as much as you can while hauling the ATV and towing the trailer. getting it tilted up 45 degrees should give you plenty of clearance. Obviously this is not an option if your tires are resting on the tailgate when the ATV is loaded. I also like the upright idea. I've seen that done many times to load several in one truck. I've never seen how they get them up like that though? Best of Luck!

I have seen guys with a system for snow machines and ATVs that basically puts the ATV or snowmachine on a platform above the box in a short bed pickup. I assume they use a winch to pull the platform above the the box. Pretty slick system. You other option is to get a long bed pickup to haul the ATV and pull the trailer. Here in Wyoming it would be legal to put your ATV on another trailer behind your camper. I see that done quite a bit here.
