Auto Ordinance

What do you all know about AO 1911 45,
I don't know that much about them and have someone who wants to sell one for what I think is a super cheap price.
Are they nice pistols?

I have one in 10mm

It was originally blue steel and due to holster wear, I painted it rather than re-bluing it..

They have their supporters and detractors and are not generally collector items...The fit/finish is not up to standards when compared to Colt products, but mine shoots pretty good, within limitations...If I were to spend some money, I could improve several aspects of it...

I got mine at a "Sheriff's Sale" auction many years ago at a 'cheap' price due to the fact that not too many people were familiar with the caliber and it's potential...Mine is one of those weapons that I may keep hidden in the car for emergencies, but if it were stolen, the thief would probably eventually throw it away after they shot it empty due to the cost of ammo and lack of knowledge...

The Thompson/Auto Ordnance company gained their original fame in the production of the Thompson Machine Gun (Tommy Gun) and grew as a result of the military effort...The restriction of the sub machine gun in the hands of the civilian market (BATF ruling) prior to WW2 limited their production and the company was taken over by one of the bigger conglomerates....

Most of the 1911s were a result of attempting to maintain a viable presence in the civilian market following that restriction...

Generally, in .45acp, you can pick one up for $300 (+/-), unless you are trying to deal with a 'collector' and it's in "new" condition...

If I were to invest some money in mine... I would look to a Beaver Tail Grip safety, a tighter barrel bushing that was truly fitted to the barrel/frame, and possibly a higher quality barrel...But I've turned into an old 'cheapskate'

and have a hard time investing a couple of hundred in a handgun that I also got for $200...

Besides, I have a Kimber 10mm

and a Para Ordnance P16/40 that has been converted into a 10mm

... So the Thompson is not going to get the upgrades and will forever remain a 'truck' gun...

Got one in .45. Not a bad gun. Got it for 300 new. Added a thing here and there on it. Only problem I have had with it is after a 1000+ rounds the firing pin started to mushroom where the hammer strikes it. But I fixed it with a wilson pin in it. For a cost of 20 bucks it was a cheap fix. Oh and I had to polish the feed ramp on it but that was because they got alittle park on it when they put the finish on it.

They're not the smoothest built guns in the world, but you couldn't expect them to be for the price. I'd have snatched it up for $200 as well!
