AZ javelina

Hey all, I’ve spent lots of time in Arizona after coyotes, but mostly on the strip. I’m looking to start chasing some javelina and wondered if anybody would be willing to give any general tips or locations on where I could start looking for them. I’ve heard there are plenty way down in AZ closer to Mexico, but I’m hoping to stay a little closer to home (southern Utah). Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Pick the area you want to apply for a permit in and Google it for javelina hunting opportunities. There are so me pretty detailed descriptions available.

All the units south of the White Mountains have javelina. Not hard to get drawn for the areas around Pheonix and Tucson or any of the southern units in general. Apply for something with high draw odds and when you get drawn research the area. The AZGF website will have species specific information for each unit.

Gila county, city of Globe if you need accommodations. Lived there almost 13 years and San Carlos reservation holds plenty of game. No idea cost to hunt the reservation, it was dirt cheap in my opinion comparing return on investment to game taken. Seldom see other hunters back in the day 1972 through 1984.

My buddies lives in Globe and battle javelina in his gardens.

I did hunt them in the mountains south of kingman, it can be great and it can be terrible the year I went it was terrible. The gang I went with usually fills out, the year I went one week and no body saw even one and no tracks or sign. On the way home I nearly hit three on the highway and they destroyed my decorative cactus in my yard, go figure.

Bought a turkey tag for San Carlos many many years ago and we didn’t see another human the entire hunt. That place was sho’nuff wilderness. Back then I had a little flip phone and I went to set the alarm for the next mornings hunt and it told me it doesn’t recognize time nor date, lol. Thank God for little handheld GPS units!!
Saw turkeys, deer, elk, antelope, mountain lions, and bears on that hunt.

Corn is key! Javelina love corn, find a cut cornfield.

They will go in towards late afternoon and they come off around daylight.

The amount of left over tags in some of the high Javi population units of southern AZ, was significantly less this year(one particular one I always was able to get, had zero). Most likely due to new demand, since B&C and P&Y started to recognize the Javi, in the record books.
