Need some help and advice from those who have done some back pack hunting before. Plan on packing to some area's of the ranch that are unaccessable except by foot. Plan on one or two nights out. What are the recomindations for a pack to carry gear, food, water and possibly meat and head back. Internal or external frame. Also a good choice of sleeping bag. The country is real rocky, rough and dry. Elevation of about 6000 I think. Close to Big Bend National Park in Deep south texas.

thanks.

I'm old school and have an old Alaska Guide pack from Cabelas. I doubt its the best pack for the job but it works for me. I like the fact I can drop the bag and use it to pack meat on the frame. As for sleeping bags I use a Mountain Hardware -15 bag but for Wyoming its a necessary bag. I also have a thermarest ground pad which is worth its weight in gold. A good water filter, top ramen and oat meal. The only other thing I would bring besides my rifle and meat bags is my jet boil stove and coffee press. My goodness I love that jet boil once you use it your hooked.

I did run into the Fire Diablos, a hand crew from the Big Bend, on a fire in California 2 years ago. What a great bunch of guys mostly from south of the border. Good luck with your hunt sounds like fun.

I've recently found the Eberlestock packs and they are what I have been looking for all along. Adjustable straps/harness and the big think is the rifle scabbard. Great for hands free walking. I have the X1 and if I ever draw a sheep or goat tag, I'll get the J107 for meat packing.

For food I would suggest you check out "Mountain House" meals. They are sold about everywhere. Freeze dried, weight about 2.5 ounces which makes a 20 oz meal. Just add hot water. Taste is great. Just my .02.
