Badger hole / den ...... what do they look like?

I am curious to know what a badger den / hole looks like. I saw a hole last week that I have a sneaky suspicion was created by a badger. It was larger than most dens I have seen and was absolutley covered in claw marks in the earth around the enterance. How can you tell a badger hole from other critters?

Badgers will sometimes dig their own dens, but they are really good at taking over old coyote dens that have been abandoned once the coyote's litter has been weaned.

Usually the hole is wider than it is tall (fits the natural shape of the badger's body) and it does have claw marks all around it.

Hope this helps!

Take care and God Bless,

Rusty

I agree on the shape. Also there always seems to be alot of fresh dirt around when occupied. The tracks around are easy to ID in this loose dirt.

Thanks guys, I bet that was exactly what Jeph and I were looking at. There had to been 8 or more of them on the hill side we walked down on our way back to the truck.

We called in a Badger last year. It didnt sneak up on us (night hunt) but it was rather bold. Derek got him with the 10 gauge, after 3 shots /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Turned out to be pretty neat footage. Man they stink, Very musky, the smell is somewhere between a ringtail and a skunk. I rolled him over with my boot and it smelled like it for a week. We actually took 2 on that trip and the first was on his mound. It was pretty impressive, He had obviously worked hard on that one.
