I went out a few times last week with Gary,my son Charlie, and Hunter-a high school buddy's son. We shot some badgers and came across some cool critters.

Not these ones. At this time of year there's little need to call them. I think we might have called that one Gary's holding out of his hole after he ran in it. My real purpose was to see how effective my .17 Fireball is on badger. I got my answer- not very. Of the 4 shot with the fireball, only one was recovered before going down a hole. It's a heck of a fox gun though.

22 Hornet works well with 45 SP "Hornets". Thanks for the info on the 17 FB. Sounds like one I can live without. P.S. Same reason I got rid of my 17 HMR, took 2 shots to the head to kill a coon from 50 ft? I was using Remington Accutips. Sold the gun and stepped up to 223 and 204.

If you want to recover badgers, head or neck shots only,
We kill lots of badgers, the biggest caliber in the body, they can get down a hole.
Small centerfire in the head or neck they are "DRT".
a 22 Mag at 20 yrds does fine,(in the head).
The longer the distance, you need more "knock down",just be sure you have an accurate shot. For a badger to "go to ground", many times they only need to make one or two kicks.
Have fun guys!!!!

Great choice, if ya like to shoot it.
"POOR HIT" is relative, because even with a .300 win mag, a poor hit badger "may/can" get down a hole.

Out of the last 100 or so badgers I hit with the .243 wssm, I could count all that went down a hole on one hand. I can live with that kind of "relative". As for head or neck shots, I have to differ. I go center mass.

I agree. I shot one with a .270 at 100 yards, pretty much opened him up threw both lungs and he made it twenty yards into his hole. It took a half hour of digging to get him out.

That's the great thing about hunting, we can all base our diff ideas on diff experience.Doesn't mean right or wrong, just diff ideas.
If you wanna take body shots that's your call, personally when clients(regardless of what they are shooting)
want a badger for a rug, or a mount, I recommend head or neck shots. I don't like to shovel.
As for center chest and exit thru the back, that to me is not a "poor shot", guts, butt, low chest, any leg, all poor shots.
I'm closing in on 500 badgers killed myself or by clients,I've seen plenty go down a hole due to poor shot placement.
My point is "a poor hit is a poor hit, caliber does not matter"
