Bait for wood-chucks

I was going to try to live-trap some woodchucks that are digging right up by the house. Can anyone tell me what the best bait to use would be?

Aaaaaaah, I walked right into that one. Here, I'll try to redeem myself....."no, they don't like wood...after all they're always chucking it up!"
Okay, lousy attempt but I had to give it a go! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Lettuce, carrots, and celery. Seriously. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Since your using a live trap, it'll be a good idea to toss some grass in to cover the bottom of the cage. They probably won't like walking in on that metal.

Thanks River Runner, I'll be sure to boil them and add a little butter /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I'd rather just shoot them and get it over with but the neighbors will probably have me shipped away via the Dixon Police Department!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Take care,
Terry

RiverRunner gave you the straight dope especially about covering the bottom of the cage trap. They seem to hate stepping on metal! My father-in-law got one by using a cob of field corn as bait but that was probably an accident (on the chucks part). I've heard of actually growing bait thru the bottom of the cage trap sometimes works in extreme cases.

Thanks polecat, I'm just goofing around with River Runner /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif As soon as that 'chuck shows his buck-toothed grin up near the foundation of the house I'll have to give the advice a try.....thanks again to both of yas!

Darknight: Try Fresh string beans, sweet corn, lettuce, peas, cantaloupe, strawberries, cucumbers, peaches and vanilla extract all these will work.

Thanks 1 Shot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif It sounds like anything that can be grown in a garden will work well for these buggars....I'll give it a try! Have a good one!

Get you a Conabear #220 body trap. The neibors will never know you killed it. Just be sure nothing else gets into it! Because once you trip the trigger on a conabear 220 it over!

I'm a happy camper, thanks to the advice I got here. Thus far, I have trapped 2 'coons and 2 woodchucks near a couple of holes bored under the wall of a pole building.
Baits of choice: fresh spinach, celery, carrots, asparagus, and peas. Worked well and the property owners INSIST on paying me. I have refused several times as this one is a learning experience for me.

I heard that throwing some mothballs down the hole will keep the critters out and then I can refill the holes. I'll have to give that one a try the next time I'm back up that way.

Thanks again y'all! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
