Baiting Questions?

I have some beavers id like to put out as baits in a few fields. WOuld these baits only be active at night. Or would they get visited durring day light (early am and late afternoon). Also I was thinking about wiring the beavers to stakes so they cant get dragged off as easy. Should I cover them with say hemlock bows to avoid crows finding them? I know we do this with our bear baits and it seems to keep the crows off but also thats in august so the scent of beaver is pretty high. Btw these guys are frozen= less stinky value.

hi marathon, mainer here to . i put bait out regular the leftovers from dinner old bread ect, yotes an foxes hit it pretty regular at night but sometimes see one at dawn. crows hit it hard during the day i havent bothered to try an cover it to keep them off i figure other predators would hear them feedin an decide to investigate.a dead crow layin there might scare others off im not sure on crow being in season but last winter one flew into my tv arial........... go figure /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif. happy hunting /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

mr4,A good idea, and I didn't invent it,in fact, got it from another Mainer here on PM,is to wrap those beavers in fencing. They will last longer and make the yotes work for their dinner. As tomh said, attracting crows is a positive thing. On several occasions I have had crows fly in to investigate distress calls and a yote or fox show up soon after.Truth is,when crows show up first,it really raises my hopes for a stand. If you have good overhead cover, like a thick spruce, and can keep the crows around without them busting ya,your chances of seeing something furry skyrockets IMHO.

Hello, another mainer here

For the past 5 years aor so I have been placing a bait pile right out back.
Right after rifle season for deer, I put out about 6 trash barrels of deer scraps that I collect during the season.
I have crows, hawks, buzzards, fisher, fox, bear, bobcat, etc, visit my coyote bait and feel that they are spreading the word about the bait.
Last winter I shot 5 coyotes off that bait from early Jan. to the end of April.
In past years I shot a few during the day, but where I can see the bait from my house, the coyotes do seem to prefer early and late day or just night time.
My best coyote was a 48 lb. all red that was shot at about 8:30 am
I am lucky where I couls see my bait whenever I was home and when I was having some visits, I would go out and wait on him the next day.
My other baits are more "normal" meaning I can not watch them so easy, on those baits, I just keep an eye on and when I see that visitors have been around I take a stand about 2 hours before dark and stay the night.
Normally I do get a few chances when practing the methods above.
The bait out back is more for just seeing what comes around and I film a lot of that.
