anyone tell me the difference between a coyote bait and lure, and which one do i use when trapping? i'm new to coyote trapping here in ohio and dont want to waste alot of time useing the wrong thing. thanks for any help to clear this up.

put something out there that stinks.....they will find it

IMO there is no difference....its just two different ways of saying the same thing.

your "lure" baits them.....your "bait" lures them....

I am no expert but MY understanding is goes something like -bait is based on a food (mice or muskrat) and a lure is usually gland based. Now I know a lot of predator lure has a skunk base. I also know other scents like mint or anise are added to change or enhance the smells. This is a very basic description but this is how I explained it to my wife and she said it made sense. Look at some of the trap supply houses. If you read about the different baits lures it will help. Also the books are very helpful for us beginners.

Here are 2 sites that have been helpful to me.

gary, what part of ohio are you from?

to aswer your question, bait is something they can eat and will work a set to get, lure is something they smell to get them to the set where the bait is.

germantown, just south of dayton. not to far from you. thanks for answering my ?. now i can work on a line. any choice brands you like that i may try?

wish I would have seen this post sooner, we had a Region C Meeting at washington courthouse this past saturday for the the Ohio State Trappers Assoc. there was a few good yote trappers there that could have set you right up. the Ohio State Convention this year is at Lima Ohio the second weekend of sept. since your new you should plan on attending at least one day. there will be demo's and vendors there that will steer you in the right direction. also some time in july there will be a field day at Xenia that would be good for you to attend.

as for brand, I like Blackie's Blends and Dobbins, I also use Forgot's lures for yotes. as for bait, Blackie's Might-T-Mouse is one of the best out there.

I would stay away from anything to stinky, that will make them roll on the set and you'll have a lot of fired traps that don't have any thing but a few hairs in them.

what traps are you using?

A bait can be fresh meat or tainted meat, or professionaly made with other odors added. A bait is something they think they want to eat. I would use both fresh and processed bait in a dirt hole. A lure is an odor attractant, it can be a curiosity lure, food lure, territorial lure, or plain urine or treated urine. T.20

Gary-

1. Call lure, a lure that will draw the coyote to your set, usually a loud skunk based lure with a gland attractant, but skunk to get them froma distance to investigate the set. Carmens Canine Call one of the best.Put above the hole on the lip of the hole or up higher on some nearby vegation to get it up in the wind.Just a couple drops, very loud!!

2. Food based lure or bait, lure a liquid base of some type of tainted meat based preserved with glycerine or sodium benzonate to stop the rotting. Not rotten just tainted. To be put in the dirt hole for the coyote to work to get at. If left on top may induce a roll on. You want him to dig to get in out of the hole, every little drop.Bait is some form of solid tainted ground meat or combinations of meats or fish etc. O Gorman's Powder River Paste Bait a good one. A chunk the size of a quarter in the bottom of the hole covered with a wad of sheep wool is enough.

3. Gland lure or Urine same result, representing another canine presence. Same as your dog smellin every place another dog has been. Coyote turds refreshed with urine or ground coyote glands, which can be bought, layed near the set work fine. Most of your better call lures now are both call and gland lure to a certain extent. Most gland lures are a mix of scat urine and coyote glands ground to a paste.

Hope this helps.
