Now this my not be big news to many of you but it is Huge news here in My area. We have been seeing an Adult Bald Eagle! In fact It seems to have taken a likeing to my farm property! He has been feeding on a deer carcass and then flys to what has become his favorite Branch and spends time there. I have got it on video tape and have set up my trail cam on the carcass in hopes to get a closeup 35 mm shot! Anyways, Where I live here in NY they are rarely seen this far inland! and for us it is a beauty to behold! what a wing span as he soars effortlessly across the hay fields! It is something big when it's something that you never seen other then in some zoo someplace! Just thought I would share it and didn't know where else to post it...AL

You know it is funny that you posted this. I have been pondering posting a very similar story, we don't have eagles here in Southern Indiana very often and while I had some friends down for a calling competition this weekend we saw a large bald eagle. We were driving down the road checking out some territory when a guy from Michigan says "There's an Eagle".

I just rolled my eyes at first but then I freaked out when I saw that white head sticking out of the trees. Here are a couple pictures I took with my little kodak camera, the eagle was perched fishing about 300 yards away... very impressive animal. I called the DNR and they came out to see the specticle. Pretty cool to see one, funny I almost called the tourists a liar before I saw the thing! HAHA

I thought some may think I was a bozo for posting that we had a Bald eagle hanging out on the property, but around here, you have about as much chance to see an Eagle in the wild as a whale surface on a fresh water lake a 1/4 mile down the road! I couldn't get a 35mm. shot of him yet and my digital is out of the question. He is feeding about 200 yrds. out and his favorite tree is about 550 yrds. I do have a good zoom on the Camcorder and have about 1/2 hour of tape of the Eagle! Today he had a slight problem with about 7 crows..with a little help from the 17HMR I evened the odds for him a bit! besides I don't care to have crows run him off the food source. I figure if he is feeding there that he must need the food. AL

I was watching the eagle above through the 24 power scope on my 17HMR as traffic and DNR passed by... I later realized that may not have been the best optics for the job. LOL!

We have as many Eagles flying around here as most folks do sparrows. But they are an awesome bird to watch. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi, Some don't care for them being the scavengers they are. We see them often right out our window, especially this time of year when they move in for calving season. Ironically we have a pair of vultures that return every year and are very big and ugly I mean interesting. I do know if you call in about someone shooting elk in a closed area a game warden may investigate but if you find a dead bald eagle the Feds show up accounting for every single feather(no Joke). A family member had this happen and one feather was missing off the old bird and the feds accused them of harboring it. Apparently there is awaiting list of indians to receive the feathers for ceremonial use, so it is highly illeagal for us to posses one.

Yeah they do get freaky about the eagles.. I called the IDNR to let them know I had spotted this eagle and talked with some woman 200 miles away. She was pretty flighty, I think the conversation went something like this...

Me; "Hello, we have an Eagle we spotted this morning and I..."

Her; "SIR IS THE EAGLE SHOT?"

Me; "Ummmm No, like I was saying, we spotted..."

Her; "SIR HAS THE EAGLE BEEN SHOT AT?"

Me; "NO, no the eagle hasn't been shot AT! We were just driving down the road and..."

Her; "SIR HAS THE EAGLE BEEN HARASSED IN ANY WAY?"

Me; "No, the eagle is fine.. trust me! We just saw it sitting on a limb and figured you guys would like to know about it."

Her; "Well, we don't really have an officer in that area so I will take your number down and let the state biologists know on Monday."

Three minutes later the C.O. pulls up in his cruiser and gets out to watch the eagle with us. I told him I just called it in and was told nobody would be out and he just rolled his eyes and said "That woman's a little off" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

He was pretty excited to see the eagle there too, we showed several friends and family but I guess he's moved on now. Or perhaps someone SHOT HIM, SHOT AT HIM or GENERALLY HARRASSED HIM!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

i'm suprised the IDNR lady wasn't more shocked a Michigan guy was spotted with ya in Indiana....lol /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

There is a nesting area of US27 up here by houghton lake it is sweet to see several pairs of eagles, and there nests, and watch them do some hunting. I tried to show my wifes cat the eagles but I was told to put the cat back in the car...

how did you guys do at the calling comp?

jrb i don't know where you live in indiana but on the terre haute tv station the other day they were in west union indiana and thry had about 50 eagles wintering there south of terre haute on the wabash about oaktown there is a pair thet nests every summer

Here in Northeast Missouri when we are coyote hunting we normally see at least one a week soaring or perched in a tree. Well yesterday their was one flying high above, my parents of a picture on him circling. Their is at least one nest along a large creek that had at least one eagle in it earlier this year. And two more were flying around, one adult and one young eagle without any white yet. They are awesome to watch fly, and I love seeing them everytime. See ya, MOyotehunter

While they may be a great sight to see at times... I have serious drawbacks when coyote hunting and you have a big old tomcat coming in and you see a flash above you and you look up!!!!! Only to see a big mature bald eagle land on a limb about 15 feet above your head... ..... Yes the cat left..

It does tend to make one want to break the law ......... No I didn't shoot the eagle.....James L.

Drew, we came in third... which is "First Loser to go home without a prize". We all had a good time though, weather was nice but our gun barrells were bent or something. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Illinois, I am about two hours southeast of Terre Haute. There are often eagles up and down the Wabash from what I hear... there are also some on Patoka Lake but rarely near my area.

Lindley, I hear ya. I almost lost a riggor rabbit to a hungry RedTailed hawk this weekend... I gave him an aukward squawk with the call to scare him away while he was in "Mid-Attack"!

James, cat or no it thrills the heck out of me to call one in when I'm hunting the LBL. I've done it twice.

What really freaked me out the other day was driving over a bridge and I happened to look up and see an osprey nest on the top girder! Bridge is busy al the time. Jimmie

I know there's been at least 1 nest and a breeding pair near the Mooresville/Martinsville area over the past few years.

Hell, I live near 86th and Ditch in Indy and had a redtail hawk nesting in my back yard last year. I'm thinking these birds are really on the rebound.

They really are magnificent to watch! Especially when they raid a squirel nest and carry their prey off kicking and fighting...

I saw my first one this winter while hunting as well. It came in and circled around my stand. I know exactly what you mean about how rare they are here in NY. It was pretty cool to see him . I'll be looking for him by the nearby lake this summmer , maybe catch him doing a little fishing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

James- Two years ago, an eagle cost me a turkey. I had the bird gobbling and coming in, when the crows start mobbing something. I thought it was the gobbler at first. Then I see a big bird fly from one tree to the next. Eagle! The crows kept up the racket, the gobbler didn't. I don't think the eagle was after the gobbler, but the crows making the eagle fly around was enought to make him decide the the hen (me) wasn't worth it. No turkey that year.
