Balistics of a 50cal muzzle loader

Probably hard to calculate ballistics on this one without knowing the velocity. Have you ever run it through a chronograph?

With that velocity I'd estimate the following ballistics:

With a 100 yd Zero
50 yd 1.3" higher than line of sight
100yd Zero
125yd 1.9" low
150yd 4.6" low
175yd 8.4" low
200yd 13" low

OR

With a 125yd Zero
50 2" high
100 1.5" high
125 00
150 2.4" low
175 5.7" low
200 10" low

Good luck
If you get to test it out, It would be interesting to hear how near these numbers are to the real world, and/or what numbers someone else calculates

I posted this on 12/3/05 - here it is again hope you may find it helpful.

The purchase of my Encore in 03 and was to be an upgrade from my Knight BK92, as I wanted to use the hotter 209 & Triple 7. With the Knight I used Goex Black Powder & MMP Sabots with 300 Gr. 458 caliber bullets made by Hawk. After receiving the Encore I placed another Simmons 44 on it. I had purchased Harvester Sabots 50 x .475 and used prototype .475 caliber 350 Gr. from Hawk along with 100 Gr of 3-F Triple- 7 [granular] and CCI 209 Magnum primers. My shots were all over the place, nothing was grouping increasing or decreasing the load made no difference. I sent the scope back to Simmons; they sent me a new replacement. Again same problem, I tried my 458 bullets MMP sabots, Hornady XTP 44 caliber 240’s & 300’s. I had no confidence in the gun what so ever. My Knight out shot this thing hands down. This summer I tried to make more time for it, I picked up where I had left off. (1) I ordered some of the MMP magnum sub-bases that protect the sabot, this certainly made a difference in tighting my groups (2) I used 2-F triple –7 [granular] a charge increase to 140 Gr. with my Harvester sabots in 50x.475 using the 350Gr. Hawk Hollow-point. At 50 yards this combo prints .982” groups. I did contact T\C – they sent me a box of 250Gr. shockwaves, with 2-F Triple-7 and the 140Gr. charge they print .860” group at 50 yards, with 3-F triple-7 they print 1 3/8” group. As you can see my Encore likes 2-F Triple 7 over 3-F, the MMP magnum sub-base is nearly a must. As for primers, I found no difference when using either CCI 209M or Winchesters standard 209’s. Here is the muzzle velocity recorded from my PACT chronograph 10 feet in from of the muzzle. Hope you find this info useful.

Buck..

.430 – 300Gr (100Gr) 3-F Triple-7 = 1703 Fps
.458 – 300Gr (100Gr) 3-F Triple-7 = 1715 Fps
.475 – 325Gr (100Gr) 3-F Triple-7 = 1627 Fps

.475 –325Gr (120Gr) 3-F Triple-7 = 1738 Fps
.475 –350Gr (120Gr) 3-F Triple-7 = 1732 Fps
.458 – 300Gr (120Gr) 3-F Triple-7 = 1812 Fps
.452 – 250Gr (120Gr) 3-F Triple-7 = 2040 Fps * T\C Shockwave

.475 – 325Gr (120Gr) 2-F Triple-7 = 1791 Fps
.452 – 250Gr (120Gr) 2-F Triple–7 = 1991 Fps * T\C Shockwave

.430-300Gr (120Gr) 2-F Triple-7 = 1863 Fps * Hornady XTP
.430-240GR(120Gr) 2-F Triple-7 = 1993 Fps * Hornady XTP

.475-350Gr (140Gr) 3-F Triple-7 = 1837Fps * Hawk – My pet load.
