Ballistic tips and pelt damage

I own a .223 and was wondering if the 50gr. ballistic tip would penetrate enough and more importantly would it cause a lot of pelt damage? By the way I'll be calling in coyotes.

ow yeh it'll penetrate enough you should'nt have any problems, and yes you'll have hide damage, but not all the time,i've used them and found them to be over kill.
use those for hogs, prarie dogs!

I shoot 55 gr. bal tips in my .223. Does great. Sometimes there is some damage(like when a bone is hit) but 80% of the time it's nothing more than a 22 caliber hole. I tried 45 and 50's, seems like the bigger bullet knocks 'em down better and don't cause as much damage. I shoot all predator and pigs with them. Randy

I shoot the 40 BT's and the 40 gr V-max in my 223. I've had more exits with the BT's because of the solid base (IMO) but both kill them dead with very little damage

What does the 55 grain do with a .243? I use 80 grain .243. Okay, so it's overkill but no kidding, pelt damage is very rarely bad. Do they even make a 55 grain for .243? It seems like a while back someone recommended this bullet to me.

I like 50 gr. in my 223 for yotes I load both Ballistic Tips which work great and as an even cheaper choice which is just as good is the TNT 50 grain by speer I believe its speer anyway its the TNT 50 grain it is really cheap and it does the job without any more pelt damage then the BT. You cant load em any faster then 2600 fps or all you get is a grey streak in the air. They really come apart on impact after penetration on yotes.

Winchester makes 55gr silver tips for the 243.
I use them out of my ruger MkII. Now the thing to useing them try not to shoot any thing close with them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif . If you do they are not fur friendly /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif .
Now if you want to see the red mist in the morning shoot a groundhog with them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif it kinda cuts them in halfe /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Locohead-- I use Winchester's 55 gr. Ballistic Silvertip in my Ruger .243 MkII, also, and have had great results with them -- even on one close shot. Shot a coyote at a mere 30 yards last January, and there was no damage to the pelt at all, other than the small entrance wound. He just fell over...dead. So far I'm impressed with them. It probably has a lot to do with what the bullet hits inside the animal, too. This fall I plan to try Hornady's 58 gr. VMax, too, and see how those do. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

LOL
I forgot to say in last post the close shots.
They was shoulder hits  . I really like the
55gr silvertips /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif .Plan to keep on useing them
and started looking for them in my 223 to use
to.

anybody ever try the 95 grain silver tips in 243 on coyotes??? just worked up some and they shoot real nice but don't know what they will do to pelts.

I'm sure the 95gr Ballistic Silver Tips will definitely punch through with a larger exit wound unless you nail bone and then you will have a mess on the entrance side. The smaller weights (55, 70, 80) in the 6mm Silver Tips and Ballistic Tips (same bullet just the Win has the black stuff (Lubalox) and Win's are only available in 55 and 95) are made for varmint with rapid destructive full expansion. The larger weighted bullets (90 (only in BT), 95) are built with graduated thickness on the sidewall to slow and control expansion to ensure proper mushrooming at extremely high velocities. This will give you an idea of the hunting weight bullet's construction:

the "varmint" bullets have thin sidewalls all the way to the solid base.
