bands on calls

Thanks Rick for the offer To help people. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif I have a question for anyone who would like to share. What is the glue and the method you all use to put the bands on your calls? Got a few I'm messin with, and would like other input. Thanks all

Cut the brass band from tubing stock and dress. I get the neck of the call the exact same size as the brass band and install the brass band by hammering it on. The band will stretch just a little. Then I drizzel thin super glue along the top of the seam. Goes right in. If you are worried about the wood shrinking a little you can pin the band on by drilling 3 little holes at 120 degrees around the band and gluing brass pins in the holes.

pretty much what Eric said. watch for shrinking. the pin method is used alot by duck call maker's. Eric has made a few hundred sound's like it work's Rick

May have to try Eric's way ,but up to now I have been cuttin the neck of a call the same as Eric. Then I cut a small grove in the neck to give the glue a grip. Then rough up the inside of the band and use 2 part epoxy to glue it on. I havent had any come loose yet.

I've been using the expanding glue, like Elmer's Ultimate and Gorilla, to hopefully combat the swelling/shrinkage thing. Not to fill, it's gotta be a tight fit or it'll never look right.

Pretty much the same as Eric with the exception of hammering the band on, and I cut a couple of grooves to give the glue somewhere to hold onto and depending on the type of wood some are pinned some are not. If you aren't careful, hammering it on can cause the band to shave the wood in some places and go out of round or possible crack the wood. Been there, done that. If you use an arbor press to seat it, the band will go on square and stay round. The band also goes on much easier with steady, distributed pressure rather than a sharp impact. Brian.

Gotcha now 9th. I might have misread it too. I also attach my bands before I turn the call. That will make a difference in the application as well. In doing that I want the band to stay as square to the shoulder and round so I can flush everything up. Thanks for clarifying the tapping vs. pounding. Brian.

I'm NOT a call maker, just an old farm boy.
That said, what if you turned your band a few thousandths smaller than the wood (or several thousandths), then warmed up the band to maybe 300 - 350 degrees in the oven, and just slid it over the wood call ? Your basic shrink fit!!

You can also heat one up using an old lamp by just laying your metal ring on top of the light bulb while it is on.It will heat them up real nicely. You can get a .003 to .004 press fit that way.

That's a cool idea too! Thanks again for the help everyone! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
