BAR .243, which scope rings

Just found a smoking deal on a new Browning Lightweight Stalker .243, so I jumped on it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif So now I need some scope rings. I have a couple of scopes, 2.5x8x36 VXIII & Burris 3x9x40 Ballistic plex, and not sure yet which I'll mount. I'm a fan of the Talley lightweights and they have 3 sizes to choose from, low, med, high. I'm wondering which height rings to order? I prefer to keep the scope low, but wonder if a 40mm objective would work with the low height rings.

Let me know what you think and if you feel there's a better choice for rings, please share.

Hello I have a bar 243 and had the leupold mount with the windage screws on the back hated the mount so i bought a deadnutz on peice mount (Its the low mount) and love it. I have the leupold 4.5-14x40 AO and i have just enough clearence between the barrel and scope cant get any lower. set up is just like it was made for it. The AO on a 40mm scope is about 44mm outside dia so if yours is a non AO 40mm you wont have a problem. But i would take a good look at the deadnutz or dednutz cant rember just how it was spelled they are top quailty and the guy behind the phone if you ask for wich mount you need is very sharp on the mounts and heights you will need. but you wont have any trouble with the low mount but ask them just to double check. Hope this helps.

Medium would be an easy choice.

I was doing some bedtime reading last eve looking through the Burris catalog. I realize every manufacturer is a little different but in their gun/scope/ring table they only showed THEIR low rings with a 2-7 scope. The main selection was medium, & some at high with the larger bells. This was for the BAR. Yes we all like low, but it's also nice to be able to get at the ejection port etc..

Yeah, but if I can use the low, I'd prefer to order those.

deerhunterjj ,
I just took a look at the Dednutz one piece. It looks very nice! I wonder if a one piece unit offers an advantage over a 2 piece set up? Thanks for letting me know about this mount!

Hey JCnAR Everything i have read and been told over the years is the one piece you dont have to worry about perfect line up like you do with the two piece. I do know that the dednutz i put on my bar was the best thing i did. Wish i would of did it years ago. To be honest the dednuts mount is ten times the mount that the leupold was. They look good they fit like a glove I just dont think you will find a better mount out there. I liked it so much i bought one for my browning x-bolt as well. If you want me to send you a picture let me know and i will get a picture for you twommrow. I am in no way have anything to do or connected to dednutz. I know that there just that dam good of a mount and its hard to find something these days that are worth every penny you pay for it. And there priced right. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Yes, I can see where the one piece may make a more solid mount. They're lightweight, and look nice. I'm really liking this set. Thanks for turning me on to this company, I'd never heard of them.

BTW, pics are ALWAYS welcome! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm pretty sure you could use the low Talley's on your BAR. Talley really needs to make an "ultra-low" mount because every set of low height Talley 2-pc Lwt's I've fiddled with has been able to float a 40mm tube high enough that I could put a set of Butler Creek Flip Up Scope Covers on and still not contact the barrel. Fine for 36mm to 40mm objectives, but those smaller ones like a 20mm is sitting way up there in the air. Anyway, with either the 36mm or even a 40mm I am pretty sure you can use the low height. You can compare the height of the mounts by researching the various online catalogs and compare the Talley with low rings from other makers. Usually the Talley comes in closer to the other maker’s medium height set-ups. The Dead Nutz is a great set-up too, but it is higher even than the Talley. Pull up a website like MidwayUSA’s and check the height of the various makers ring/base set-ups for your specific gun. A little research like that can be the best way to determine something like this.

Deerhunterjj, I went for the Dednutz rings and I'm very pleased! Thanks again. I almost didn't post on this but I'm glad I did.

I personally like the Warne 2pc steel base and ring setup. The lows allow for close mounting of a 40mm and the highs are used for 50mm scope with just a tiny gap(about a doubled over business card)between scope and barrel. Also the Warne base and ring configuration accommodates shorter scopes by allowing the scope to be slide further back.
