CWeeks, you should check the price of a Pac Nor and Lothar Walthar.
A huge factor is what is your intended use for the gun and how much accuracy do you need?
I have had a lot of custom guns and have put less than top drawer barrlels on some rifles to compare them.
With the cost of shipping and chambering a barrel, I will save my money a little longer and get excellent quality barrels from now on.
You can't believe how dumb it makes you feel when you have gone to all the trouble to have a barrel put on a rifle just to see the project go sour.
Having said this, I had a good friend that I shot with at the range constantly that used Shaw barrels. His barrel shot 1" while mine shot .300 or less. Question is just how much accuracy do you need to make you feel satisfied about your project?
The custom AR's with top notch match barrels will shoot .400 or less with high end optics with taylored loads for that gun. The joy in shooting a gun of this quality will turn a bad day into a good day everytime...what is that worth to you?
Great points thanks for the post. For me I will never be shooting matches, shoots..... I want a .75-1" rifle is all. For now I have a Dtech that has shot several 5 shot groups at .5 and love it. My rifles are used for practical hunting rifles. This one will be for 350 or less shots on rockchucks and yotes. So 1" is great for me at 100 yards.
Knockem,
I would have do disagree with you...UNLESS you are looking for a match rifle. I have a Stevens with an $80 scope on it(cause that is all I could afford at the time) and I have shot some amazing groups with it. And hutning situations I have shot some chucks at 300+ yards with that same combo. I thought I would change the scope out when I could afford it and it has been so accurate that I have not wanted to change it.
None of my rifles have expensive scopes on them and I have been real happy with them. But one will be upgraded at some point cause it fogs up if it is cold outside but the rest have never let me down.
