Barrel splitting???

Have any of you guys ever had a barrel crack/split the last half inch or so after having it ported? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif I have a tikka t-3 lite stainless that split the last half inch from the edge of the port to the muzzle. I had it ported to reduce muzzle jump, but would have never done it if I knew this was a remote possibility! By the way there was no barrel obstruction. It was cold outside when this might have happened, I didn't notice until I was cleaning it after a rigourous week of night hunting. THat week it was down to -20 below. I'll be letting you know how Mag-Na-Port handles the situation. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Just one man's opinion here. I have had ported shotguns and non ported shotguns and I have come to this conclusion:

1. Porting does little in the way of muzzle jump

2. It makes any gun unnecessarily loud and weakens the metal

3. It de-values a gun

Your mileage may vary....

The porting probably had little to do with it beyond creating a stress riser. Some stainless does not do well at low temps. It can get real brittle. As an example Krieger will not sell a stainless barrel for use on a big game rifle because it may be shot in very low temps.

It was likely a combination of all the above plus maybe some bad metallurgy.
