Im going to buy a beagle for rabbit hunting and would like to know if there are any good websites or videos even books that will help me train it. Or is it just instinct that when they are born thay search for rabbits. Id want to get a beagle so bad but Im trying to suck up all the info I can before buying one. Any advise or suggestions would be very nice. I figured this would be a good place to ask this question. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Thank you for any input.

p.s. Can you use beagles for coons? Just curious, Im only going to use the one I get for rabbits though.

Key is to get a pup from a good bloodline. Keep taking the pup out as much as possible, time afield is another big factor. A trick I learned when I was young my father taught me is to box trap a cottontail. Tie a string about two feet long to the cottontails leg. Attach the other end to a stick or wooden dowel. Release the rabbit in a brushy field in front of your pup. The rabbit will only go so far before the stick gets hung up in the brush. Let the pup chase the rabbit a few times by sight then release the rabbit without letting the pup see what direction he went. This will usually force the pup to use his nose to locate the cottontail. After a few times you can release the rabbit unharmed. Another good idea is to run your pup with older hounds. Taking your pup out by itself is also important. You don't want him to rely on other hounds to start/pick up a lost track of a cottontail. Research if their are any beagle clubs in your area. Like I mentioned find a pup from a gundog bloodline. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Had a few beagles over the years that would pound a fox pretty good as well.

Thank you beagler for that info. I am going to use that rabbit technique. Do I need any special collars or any other gear? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Not sure what you mean by special collars? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif If you mean a shock collar I'd say probably not. Only if your pup starts taking deer. Haven't had alot of problems with beagles and deer for the most part. Back when we ran foxhounds it was a different story.

yup I meant shock collars. I should have specified that. You have been so much help. Thank you again. Have fun running your beagles.

redfoxfur,
there are a lot of UKC as well as AKC
clubs in PA. depending on what part you’re in.
I do field trial some in PA.
I start all my puppies solo first and then
run them at a 4 to 1 ratio with an older started
dog that is straight and doesn't have any major
faults. This allows them to learn to pack up,
but also allows them to be independant too.
All most young dogs learn to do when
run with older dogs is me too bark. I have seen
a lot of young dogs ruined like that. Beagler
is on the right track with the rabbit trick.
I personally keep San Juan rabbits to start
my puppies, if you have a starting pen close
by that is a good way to start puppies.
My puppies out of my bloodline usually start
at 3 1/2 to 4 months. I would say a shock
collar is a most for rabbit hunting. It
makes the job a lot easier. There are very
few bloodlines that are naturally straight.
The collars are just as much for obedience
as running trash. It will make the job a
whole lot easier, you have the ability stop
a bad habit before it starts. The new tri-tronics
collars have a toner you can use to call your
dogs in before you need to shock them. Once my
puppies start in the pen in my yard, I take them
were there are rabbits setting out and let them
see them. They will sight chase the rabbits, once
they lose sight they will start using their noses.

Hope this helps

You can always go to American Beagler

Smokes Creek Kennels have some good dogs. I had a couple that came out of Triple Champion Smokes Creek Syris McGee.

Branko Krpan has some excellent dogs. Most the breeders have Branko dogs in their bloodlines.

Southern Kennels run some excellent dogs. Several champions.

Oakhill Kennels have solid dogs.

If you really want some fast, hard running dogs.........then ya gotta try the Patch bloodline.
Look up Terry Vanosdale. These dogs are strong, all day running hounds. They were founded in the 1890's by Willet Randall. These boys breed true to the Patch breed for the most part. I had several of them and you can still find them on my website.

Have fun on your search. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Bopeye,
thank you for the info but I found a local guy who has beagle pups that come from a good bloodline of hunting dogs. Now alls I have to do is keep begging the wife. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Glad to hear ya found some dogs........now if you go to the American Beagler site......they'll even teach you how to beg for another dog.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's the truth.......they share stories with each other all the time on how they manipulate their significant other to let them get another hound. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I can't imagine having a beagle and not going there frequently. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif
