Bear meat...

Cleaning up a bear and cutting off all that fat is a major chore, but I would mind doing so much if I could get my family to eat it. My wife flat out refuses to cook or eat it, which in turn gives permission to my two little ones to turn up there noses to it.

I’ve down loaded recipes off the internet and have cooked up some pretty good meals in hope of changing their minds… but no such luck. Half of the guys I talk to say they eat bear meat if they catch it at the right time of year and the others say they usually give the meat away for the same reason I have so much… Their family doesn’t like it. What do most of you bear hunters do?

ive taken three bears over bait and we feed them nothing but sweats and they have all tasted great. its way better than venison. my wife won't eat it either so i cook bear steaks for me and the kids and she gets beef. her loss. yooper

Folks seem to have a stigma about eating bears. I'm not sure why. I've eaten several and they are all very good. Our Minnesota bears eat grains, berries and acorns. Nothing better to produce a fine tasting animal.

I know you aren't supposed to eat them unless they are cooked fairly well but I never grill my steaks past medium and they are wonderful. I also do a lot of hot, shredded meat sandwiches. It's rare that people can tell them from beef when done that way.

I think the problem they have with eating them is because it's a bear. If they didn't know, they'd like them. (Trim off ALL fat though.)

TAC,

Not sure what type of bear ya have, but black bear is one of the best tasting meats I have had. I even like it better then moose or caribou.

If ya can, flash freeze the back bone then cut it into T-Bone steaks. Then season or marinate(SP) as needed.

The rest is roast, sausage, and jerky.

In my case it hasn't mattered if they were feeding on berries or gorging on salmon. If ya get on to it right away after shooting it, there is not much of a taste difference.

You're right about that Randy. When someone tells me they tried bear and "It tastes like pork,I didn't like it" I know they didn't try it. Iy looks tastes and is similar in texture to beef and has very little or nothing to match it to pork.

I've treated it the same as moose/deer/elk/bighorn, it's all good. Sausages, pepperoni, steak roasts, jerky. It all disappears around my house.

The prejudice against it could be avoided if the person turning their nose up doesn't get to see the carcass or here all the details of the hunt. Not all truths need be spoken.I can just say I have a cold, I don't need to describe how I've been sucking snot for 3 days and am getting tired of it.
I say nothing. Take it out of the freezer and cook it. If we have friends/ family over I just say "Roast" or "Steaks" I always start with a few fried onions, to get everyone interested. Unless it's my inlaws, then I usually show the slides of field dressing the beast beforehand. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

My friends and family are on to me. I say we are having "roasts or steaks" and they ask me what kind!!!

Even when it's beef, they often doubt it and some seldom eat at our house unless we are having ordered pizza.

Randy, My wife and kids all ask the same thing even though they are pretty open minded and eat just about anything. They ask whats for dinner. I tell them meat. They ask what kind. I tell them the kind you eat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

My wife made up her mind years ago she wouldn't eat it due to to things:
1) a coworker told her how bad it smells when she cooked it for her husband and 2) She read in one of her class books that on a scale of 1 to 100 with 1 being the the best for you and least toxic of the meats that while deer and chicken are in the teens that bear is in the 90's. After that not a chance. And this is coming from a woman who enjoys knocking squirrels out of the tops of trees and popping bambi with the best of them.
