Bear response from fawn distress??

Al,
There are at least a couple of guys here that have called bears with fawn distress crys. I think Timberking used a fawn decoy when he called in his bear. Everyone must be gone fishing today. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Never have but know that bears play a major roll in predation on fawns, if you call enough during this time of year it could definately happen!

Al,
I have property and hunt in the Catskills. A few years back during a Memorial Day weekend at the property we heard a fawn "cryin, bleating " not far from the house. It had either been abandoned, lost or injured. After several hours of hearing this and not wanting to "interfere with Mother Nature" we heard a loud "bear-like" growling, roaring from the direction of the fawn and we never heard the fawn again. We believe that the fawn's constant bleating caught the attention of a bear and the growling, roaring w heard was the bear going in for the kill.
If you check the board under the Lions,Bears and Houndsmen topic you can see pictures of bears called in by one of our fellow PM members in Wisconsin using fawn in distress and a fawn decoy.

Al,
Read the topic "Wolf Attack" under Lions,Bear, and Houndsmen. Some exciting bear pics. And the pics are actually from Michigan.

Hi Eddie; It was the thread you started about fawn distress call that prompted me to start this thread. I`ve heard of bears coming in to fawn call and from what I understand, they come in fast & furious. For this reason I would be sure I was packing some serious heat when coyote calling in bear country. A few years back I spoke to a couple turkey hunters returning from their hunt near Hunter Mtn. in Catskills and one hunter called in a charging bear with a turkey call.

Al,
My property is between Prattsville and Grand Gorge about 20 miles from Hunter MTN. My dad's been hunting up there for about 32 years and until
a few years back none of us had ever seen a bear during hunting season. Until my I saw one with a big triangle shaped white patch on his chest, opening day deer season 96, and my brother shot another 5 days later and 200 yds away that weighed 387 lbs. Since then we have been seeing track all the time ( paw prints and scat ). We bought a trail timer camera this year and I have 3 rolls of film of the bears coming into a feeder.
One picture , taken at night, shows two bears standing up, facing off against each other.
I'm really "new" to Predator hunting although I've dabbled for years . Fawn in distress is the one call that has called in Coyotes for me. Do you hunt nearby ????

Al,
I've also had bobcats and coyotes come in after Turkey calls. We were making the Turkey call the cats responded to .....the coyotes responded to actual Turkeys that were " talking " while we watched them as we hunted deer

Al,
I had three bears come into the fawn in distress call on my phantom last June, the time of our largest fawn drop here in Maine. I was also useing a decoy. The problem was I was hunting coyotes.
The first two wern't too bad, coming in slow and scaring off easy. But the last one, somewhere around 300-350 lbs came in on a tear. I was able to stop him right before he smashed my deke, but he wasn't happy a bit, stood up growlin and popping his teeth, made a few bluff charges, all the while I'm yellin and hollerin and hittin buttons on the phantom(I was hopin that pig sound would scare him off, sounds scary to me:) )
After what seemed like alooonnng time, he headed in the other direction, and so did I.
A .223 is no match for a hungary blacky, and I've decided I don't really need to hunt coyotes in June /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey Roadkill,
I've read somewhere that bears will come in to pig sounds ( grunts/squeals ). They must love bacon more than me. I'm sure more of the experienced callers on the forum can either verify or correct that.

Hi Eddie; I live in Schenectady county and hunt near my home and Adirondacks. The turkey hunters I met were returning to their car parked at Colgate Lake, actually closer to Tannersville. I don`t hunt much in Catskills but do some trout fishing there in Spring.
Last year there was story published in local paper about turkey hunter attacked by 2 coyotes. The hunter had shot 1 of them at point blank range coming in to turkey call.

Al,
I have that article somewhere . I'll try to post a link for our friends here if I can find one. I'm not far from Colgate Lake. Our proerty is in Delaware County, but 2 miles away is Greene, another 2 miles is Schoharie, and mavbe within 15 miles I can also reach Ulster. My brother set up our trailcam the first weekend in May so I'm doing to get over there and get the pictures developed. In that spot last year we had a few bears returning, always at night. I have pictures of these bears on about 15 nights

The coyote's in that attack were not attacking a human, they were homing in on what they thought was a prey animal. When we fully camoflauge ourselves we often leave the eye region of the face exposed. This small patch of white is what they are homing in on when they come to the calls.Nearly all prey animals have this small patch of white coloration somewhere on the body. It's the most easily seen color in nature yet it is important to animal camoflauge. Th emost exiting calling sessions you will ever have are when the coyote charges in full bore looking you straight in the eye's. Jimmie
