Bear....

Just a note. A guy about 25 miles from here killed a 400 pound black bear that attacked his dog this week. The dog set up a ruckus and the guy stepped out of his house to see what was going on. He immediately saw a large chocolate colored bear rolling the dog around so he stepped back into the house and grabbed his Marlin M60 .22LR and cut down on the bear killing it. Conservation officials weighed it at 400 pounds. At this time no charges will be filed on the shooting because even though bears are protected, officials think the bear was one of several problem bears in the area. Missouri Conservation put down another problem bear in this general area last year and has live trapped and relocated several more.

Shot placement is everything ! WOW-22LR huh?

OR.......the more lead thrown downrange, the better! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

And folks want us to bring back large predators. A couple of foolish people started a fuss on another hunting forum about how the wolves should be left alone and the farmers move!

But I have to say some folks in missourri need to change the back door varmint gun. Lucky he didn't just [beeep] that one off! A bear that size could do some real damage. Jimmie

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gifBoy! you got that right. I have to agree whole-heartedly. Had to be through the ear or something.

Knew an old gentleman once that kept a very old bolt action by the door. Hated deer with a passion! They ate his sweet taters. Old coot stood eighty yards away at his back door and put one round right behind the ear where the skull is weak. Some of the bucks in that ditch would break your heart /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif The old man left the farm when he could no longer put out his gardens at the ripe old age of 92. Jimmie

The name of the nearest town (if you want to call it that) is Marquand, MO. That's Madison County in the eastern Ozarks.

I don't know all the details, I caught a news snipit on the big city St. Louis TV news show. The guy was standing outside telling the reporter what happened and had the .22 in his hands. It sounds kinda BS to me, I doubt the bear HAD to be killed. I do know that the MDC killed a problem bear last year, and are trapping and relocating 2-6 bears yearly now. A non-resident turkey hunter killed one last year that he originally claimed attacked him in his woods campsite. He eventually fessed up and paid a fine and lost hunting priveledges because it didn't happen like he said. With a steadily growing population estimated at maybe as many as 900 bears human/bear run in's are inevitable. I spoke with a Conservation Agent several years ago while checking a turkey and he warned me of a problem bear where I was hunting. It had raided some turkey hunters campsite and kept them sleeping in their truck. Some of the remote campsites in the National Forest here have warmings about bears posted. I'd sure like to see a wild Missouri bear. I know they inhabit the areas I call, I have research data that the areas I call are some of the most heavily populated by bears in the state. Same for Mountain Lion, a Conservation Agent filmed a lion on a deer kill a mile from one of my deer stands! Our fastest growing large "predator" is wild/feral hogs. That's a population over 3,000 now and growing quickly. Hogs are open season. I figure one of these days I'll see one while I'm calling predators. I hope it's a friendly sighting!!!

I saw the news artical on that bear and wondered how far from your stomping grounds it was. Hope you only see the friendly side of one of those!

GC,

We're 'bout eat up with bears here in North Florida. I've come up on steaming piles of scat on cold mornings while hunting and have seen where they stepped in my tracks but no actual sightings for me in the last two years. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

They keep threatening to let us hunt them again but the bunny huggers keep whining for us to leave "Smokey" alone. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Sad to say it'll take someone getting killed by hitting one in a car or some kid will get attacked before they'll actually allow the hunters to start harvesting them here again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

We now have about 5-10 generations of bears since we've been allowed to hunt them in Florida and they're getting quite brazen. I think it's whether or not they've been hunted that makes them so brazen but when bear populations explode all bets are off! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Yeow!!! You don't play!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I saw a bear track just a couple hundred yards from my house today... There goes any ideas of a feeder in my back yard... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I'd guess a bear would wreck havoc on a feeder. My bird feeder in the front lawn gets reguarily dissasembled by coons. They're a pain in the butt, they will tear the thing down to its various parts for the seeds and corn inside. That sits around 25 yards from the front door. I know I wouldn't want bears that close to the house!

GC,

Yep... It ain't a purdy thought... The wife opens the door and finds a bear that close and she'll prolly evict me, the bear and the feeder... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I have friends that maintain feeders for deer year round here (it's legal if they do it year round) and they say that once a bear finds a steady supply of corn you'd might as well move the feeder a long ways away.

They'll either wreck the feeder or take up permanent residence at the sight and you won't get a chance at anything but a "protected bear"... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

Oh well... Nobody ever promised me a rose garden... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I would replace the .22 behind the door with a .30-06 or maybe a .45-70. I have a friend with a feeder which is located 100 yards or more from his house, and he has a blind built so that he can film the bears that come to feed. This sounds like great fun, but I wouldn't want any bear feeder set up on my back porch or anything. Get em too close and you are asking for mucho trouble. Oh and one more thing--- I wouldn't make a habit of hunting BARE. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If ya'll do choose to hunt BARE, please don't post any pic's of your hunt here! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yech... That sure ain't a purdy thought... On of us pot bellied old farts hunting BARE!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have a deer feeder in the woods behind my house. I can see the flash of the camera at night from my patio. Bears visit this feeder every day along with deer, turkey, coons and other smaller critters. I have a trail camera watching the feeder. The bears never bother the camera or feeder, and they do not seem to bother the other critters.
The small buck in this photo is more worried about the flash of the camera than anything

The deer and other critters stay away when the bears are around, but show up as soon as they leave

This photo is out of focus, but you can see that the bears have learned how to shake the feeder to make the corn fall out

BobR,

If the bears have already figured out that shaking the feeder get's more corn then it won't be long before they figure out that all the corn is coming from the big barrel and they'll knock it down and tear it up getting at the rest of the corn.

Happens here all the time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Switch to soybeans and bears usually lose interest but deer usually stay. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Just an idea. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Nice photos!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif
