Needing some help, or advise on how to harvest two beaver's.
One on the NCO's I work with has two beavers tearing up his fruit trees, then returning to there pond. The pond is on my co-workers place and has asked me to try and get rid of them, only problem is I do not have any traps.

Have considered shooting them, but how to retreve? Also cant seem to catch them out of, or in the water.

Have seen them, and they are big, but only breifly and very early in the am. Any suggestion's would be great.

first thing you should do is check your regs and make sure you can shoot them and what kind of licence you might need (you might need a trapping licence to harvest beaver). Maybe your co-worker could buy you a couple 330 conibears or some #5 leg holds and set them on some of there trails or around there hut(that would be your beat option). But if you cant get any traps you might have to play the waiting game, Just set up in a area where you got a good view of whats going on and wait for them to go to work. There are probly more than just 2 beavers in the area so if you want them out for good you are going to have to use traps unless you dont have any thing else to do but wait.

good luck

P.S Beavers dont float /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

If the beaver are damaging trees then most likley the law will say take'm out. BUT you better check. I know it is like that in Indiana but thats just us. Do you have any idea where there den is? Is it accessable? if so then trapping right at the den entrance will help cut down the waiting time. If you want the thrill of the hunt the mornings are the best time to find them. wait till they come to shore to get some munchies and BANG blow the little feller to kingdom come. I had to take out some beaver that were flooding some farm land. I used a tree stand that was set up along one of there runs and waited. if you think yotes are tuff wait till you try to get a beaver.

If legal to kill them, pull part of the dam out and sit tight...they can hear it draining and will come to the rescue.

Thanks Gent's,

I have checked with the local game and fish warden, and I can harvest them any way I choose, as long as I have my lifetime license, WHICH I DO, I am ok.

I guess I will try and destroy there dam, and sit a wait. The pond has almost dried up except the end that the beaver's are in. I just didnt know if they would sink or float after putting a whole into them.

Will let yaknow how it turns out.

We used to shoot them with a bow and fish arrow with line but you got to hold on they are strong. We dam near lost the whole setup one night.

Ive shot many beavers and they come out at dusk to check there dam every night so its just a waiting game.
Try to shoot them around sandbars or when there up on the bank. Im pretty sure they will sink and come up at a later date. I have used 22LR, 12ga with #BB, 308 and a 410 with slugs ive never had one get away and up here in canada a good male beaver can tip the scale at 70lbs. Around here they done seem to shy away from gun shots last year we took 4 beavers in 2 hours.

I have chased them many nights in my lake, with lights and lots of beer (that really adds to their chances). I have shot them in the water and had them sink immediately, and also had them float for a few minutes then sink. I figure, and have done this, if they are damaging trees, find the one they are working on and wait near it. When then get on land they can be yours, depending on the beer consumption to that point.

I have a 50 pounder mounted and it looks perty cool.

Good luck, Michael

Lets see a picture of the mount. Perferable before you finsih the 12 pack, its not your eyes that a blurry, its the focus on the camera. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Hey guys...I need to remind you that we aren't the only ones reading these forums.
Our statistic pie chart still shows a sliver of government related visitors every month.

I realize most of your are joking around...but do these people?
Just be careful. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Pulling the dam apart will get you some results!
I've done this while working with my brother on his farm!

However, you said that you would try to destroy their dam, well, you don't have to go quite that far, just put a hole in it, about 2 feet wide, that will lower the water level 5-6 inches if it doesn't get patched!

Sometimes they will still wait until last light, but most times they will show up shortly after you get done doing your damage!

When we had the beaver problems, I used a 22Hornet with 46 grain Hollow Points! I got 11 beavers the first day! They usually sink and then float the next day! Never had to shoot a beaver twice!

NOTE: It is easier to retrieve the carcasses if you shoot them from the "pond" side vs "downstream", while they are on top of the dam!

Good Luck

Beer? Guns? PD Lt? For someone from your trade i figured you would have known about beer and guns. If you didn't want to offend anyone you shouldn't have posted that. Way out of line!!! Should i even bother mentioning ILLEGAL? Maybe it's not in your state but here in PA it is....and highly frowned upon.
For someone who is supposed to uphold the law, you sure don't have any respect for it.
Disgusting

Trap the beaver out. Much easier than waiting all night with a gun in hand.
