Beaver Traps

depends on what sets your going to use.

if setting up channels and dens, use 330's

if setting up slides or feed beds, then I would go with a #3 to #5 foothold.

snares work also. but you have to have long stakes for them and make sure they are staked solid. good luck and happy trapping.

thanks for the information,is there any brand of trap that i should stay away from,or is there any brand of traps that you would recommend

i would recommend the duke 330 it is a good trap and much cheaper than others... i do just fine with them.. you'll get people who are totally against duke traps but i have never had any issues

I prefer Bridger traps myself. I mainly use the 330 connibears. I have a hard time making drowning sets with foot traps because of water being to shallow.

My buddy uses the MB-750 when it comes to legholds for beaver. It's also attached to a drowning wire anchored in deep water by a cement block. He also uses these on land for predator trapping. Kinda large but they hold the largest of the predators, where a lesser trap has been destroyed in the past. The predator traps are separated and carefully handled.

As a bird dog owner can I please say...Be careful and make sure your traps are legally set. For the conibear, make sure it's either completely under water or is in a box set. I had to pull my dog out of one and was lucky to get to him alive. It was placed on Public hunting ground in Iowa and was on the land on a beaver slide, no box and full of musk. Luckily when he put his nose in his front paw was in as well, saved his neck from being broken and gave me the extra minute to open it up. I now carry a shoelace to open them up. Most dog owners I know are fine with trappers and we understand the risk when we run dogs, as long as the sets are legal and keep other users in mind. Leg holds pose no threat to dogs as we can quickly get to the dog, release them and usually just continue to look for Pheasant. So I prefer to see the leg holds.

Thanks for letting me spout off about the accidental trapping of bird dogs. If this is on private, posted land then by all means do what ever you need to get the beavers out.

Jim
