Bedding traps in dry dirt

I've been setting some traps (in Utah) and the ground is dryer that a popcorn fart. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I'm having trouble getting the traps set solid. Any thoughts on how to overcome this?

You are exactly right. Bone dry dirt won't pack.

If you are using coil springs which are swiveled on the bottom, the hole for the trap needs to be shaped like a small bowl. This allows the swivel a place to go so it doesnt bottom out and the frame rests on the outside of the bowl.

If you are using rebar stakes with washers, you can drive the stake in a place which allows you to use it to rest the loose jaw of the trap. It rests over the washer and against the stake.

Just a couple of things which might help.

Like,Randy said,or you can use long spikes. Put one to the front and one to the rear of the base plate on opposit sides.Make sure the heads go down against the base plate.Gutter spikes will work or you can buy long spikes at most lumber companies. The ones i use are between 7 and 9" long. This will take the wobble out of your trap and you can make it nice and level.
