Beding a Rifle Stock

So I picked up a rifle with a composite stock and I would like to bed it. I have never done it before but I am pretty sure I can accomplish the task without any issues...I am going to buy a Brownells Stock Bedding Kit and get it done. My question is, can I or should I add some media to the bedding material? Kinda like when you're pouring concrete and you add a little rebar to it to stiffen and hold better....Any thoughts?

Caliber doesn't matter when it comes to bedding IMO! I'm not sure what kind of media you would add but I would say no, not needed. Again JMO. My best advice is take your time and use plenty of RELEASE AGENT!!! I use Acra-Glas Gel or Marinetex. Both of those set up very hard. The gel and Marinetex is pretty thick and stays where you put it, not runny. Lots of video's on bedding. Watch a few and see how its done.

You didn't mention what gun or action, but in any case, remove the trigger and anything else attached to the bottom of the action, and fill in the recesses with modeling clay, and smooth it out...

First though, check to make sure that the barreled action is sitting centered in the stock, and make sure the action screws are not touching the stock...

Since you are going to glass bed the action, I would think you are also going to install aluminum pillars, which is definitely recommended...

Since I do a lot of filing of stainless steel parts on one of my lathes, I save those small shavings and add them to the Brownell's Acra-Glas Gel on certain bedding jobs, to add extra strength to it...

My favorite bedding material though is Marine Tex!

In bedding the recoil lug, bed it tight except for the very bottom. You want clearance there...

And like has been said, don't forget the release agent! You can also put some on a Q-Tip and rub is along the top edge of the stock to make removal easier. Just before the bedding compound gets too hard to work with, you can remove the gun from the stock and "fillet" the bedding compound off the top edge of the stock. Once you have all of that done, put the gun back in the stock, tighten the stock screws, and let the bedding compound finish curing...

Any questions along the way, just ask!

I took all the flex out of the forend of a TC venture stock by filling the honeycomb voids with 2 hr 2 part epoxy. I used a bent #9 wire heated to make pass through holes in each rib. The action I bedded using marine tex.

Whats your favorite release agent when using Marine Tex David? I usually use the left overs from Acra-Glas but its almost gone.

Thanks for the replies. It’s a T/C Compass in 6.5 CM. I will put a laminate on iit in the future but for now , I am just going to bed the stock it came with until then. Thanks again !

If you will use a brake cleaner or starting fluid to de grease the action/barrel, screws, then spray all with two coats of Acra-Release Aerosol, you will NeVER stick a gun in the stock...never. Spray the Acra Release in the chamber, lug area, etc. Then wash it off with the Brake cleaner or starting fluid...easy!

ALL the problems that I have seen that guys have is from using WAX. They did not coat the areas in the lug area with wax, nor the chamber. They ended up with epoxy glued in those hard to get areas.

I and a few others have had trouble with Pam, also.

BEST MONEY YOU CAN SPEND. Release agent is not an something to be tight with your money.

I have used Pam before and never really had any problems but that stuff is nasty to clean up after.I use the Acra release that comes in the kits. Usually brush on two or three good coats. Easy to clean up and it works. Guess I need to buy the spray. I've never tried it before.

Spray gets in all the small areas, hard to get to with a Q tip or paint brush wiping it on. Just wash the spray off when you are done.

YouTube is your friend for a project like this. Not difficult at all fallow your instructions and take your time and be patient. Lots of good videos on how to put there.
