Things have slowed down and we got some cold weather for SWGA, so I decided to go out last night. We had a SW wind which is been waiting on and started off in some planted pines the pine straw people had just picked and rolled.
I set the caller down and 30 seconds in I spotted movement in the scanner. The manager had been seeing a couple in this area and wanted them gone. It stopped and sat down when I cut the call but it was too late. I was on the gun and was able to make a 125yd shot.
I continued playing prey distress for another 10 minutes or so but nothing else showed. I did a lone howl, pair howl, and some pup sounds for the fun of it and heard nothing.
I decided to go ahead and gather everything up and make a move.
I drove around to what I call the “Horse Barn Gate” and pulled through and parked. This road has planted pines on either side and they’d picked it as well. To the North is a thick semi swampy area behind a pond and to the South are mature plantation pines.
Through the scanner I saw a bale they left right next to the road so I decided to walk the 200yds and set my call on it and back up to the next available bale and set up the tripod.
I started off with Thumper at medium volume and after a minute I dialed it up to max for about 15 seconds then back down to medium. I don’t think I was quite at the 3 minute mark when I spotted a deer bolt from the cover to the North heading South. I immediately dropped the scanner and got on the gun and a coyote comes out heading straight for the bale the caller is sitting on top of. It was an easy straight on 75yd shot.
Unfortunately I didn’t hit record so all I have is a pic. I didn’t weigh it, but it was a hefty male! I continued calling after the shot with the same sequence as before but nothing else showed.
I decided even though I’d only been gone maybe an hour to call it a night because the wife wanted to go see the Southern version of the “Northern Lights”
I picked up the wife and we went to a harvested peanut field first then hit a cotton field.
Turned out to be a beautiful night! The wife was happy and I was happy!! May try and hit another couple spots this evening before heading out to look at the lights again!
