Agreed. I shoot a benelli nova 12 ga and the 3.5 dead coyote. I use the full choke that came with the gun and have never felt a need to buy anything else. I have hit coyotes out to 60 yards (past this may be pushing it for me). At 40 yards I can't imagine you would have a problem knocking them down.

Use all that ammo patterning your stock chokes and then try an aftermarket choke. I never got a 50 pattern out of my nova with stock chokes and 2 aftermarket ones. Patterning is everything. Theres tons of good chokes out there. Check out the shotgun patterning thread in the firearms section. No one can recommend a choke that will work without patterning it. Even if you have the same gun and ammo.
