Anyone tried /use Berger's ammo ? I was surfing the other day and seen some in 6.5 PRC , 140 or 144 VLD ( can't remember)and the EOL 156 gr. I'm thinking the brass will be Lapua ?
From their website: "Berger Ammunition uses the highest quality Lapua premium cartridge cases for all offerings except 300 Winchester Magnum. The 300 Winchester Magnum is loaded with a high-quality alternative. Lapua premium cartridge cases are the #1 choice for demanding competitive shooters and accuracy enthusiasts who reload."
I haven't, but based upon the quality of their bullets I'd venture to say that it is top notch ammunition. Never seen anything come out of Berger that wasn't excellent quality.
Just looking for feed back on a product I've never used. I did a DIY build in 6.5 PRC this past fall.
Wanted something I could use good factory ammo on. I mostly reload my centerfire rifle ammo, but some times it just nice to grab a few boxes and go shoot ! Shoots Hornady Precsion Hunter 143 Eldx very well ! I'm sitting on 17 boxes of that currently.
I am in the same boat. Brownells had it on sale for $40 a box for months and months. That in addition to the "forgot30" coupon one could use after spending $200 or more. I am an edge member there so i got free shipping also.
That is the 1st time i have bought factory ammo in around 15 years.
I ended up with a 2, 6.5 PRC's. One is a M70 controlled round feed short action, the other is a browning X-Bolt.
The funny thing is..... They shoot 100fps different velocities. To get 2900 fps with 143 grain ELD-X's in one of them i need 59 grains of H1000. The other one will do it with 57.3.
I pretty much have settled on H4831 for the slower barrel, and H1000 for the faster barrel. Case fill is perfect!
Had i not bought all that factory ammo, i may have bought Lapua.
Since i was caught being a victim to Hornady's marketing, it is too much of a pain to develop loads with different brands and all that crap. The older i get, the less patience i have for endless tinkering.
At the moment i am playing with 130 grain CX and 127 grain LRX bullets.
With the exception of my ARs, which get WW brass (got loads of it and they sling it across the county causing a game of hide-and-seek), everything else gets loaded with Lapua brass. I have no doubt that it is more consistent and in my experience lasts WAY longer than any other brand if cared for properly. So in essence, that takes away a bit of the cost comparatively. Then again, if I shot as much as some I might have a different view.
It's been years since I stocked up on factory rounds, but seeing deals like that makes it hard to resist. I’ve mostly been shooting bulk 223/5.56 for my AR, and I’ve found a solid selection over here https://bulkmunitions.com/rifle/223-rem-556x45-ammo/. I feel you on the time drain that load development can be – especially when the velocities are so different for seemingly similar setups! I think once you find that sweet spot with a particular powder, it’s hard to justify changing it up, especially when you've got a stash of factory ammo ready to go.
