Best 223 Powder for reloading

Ill go ahead and apologize if this topic has been brought up a lot over the past year but I did a search and couldnt find what I was looking to find out. What is the best powder accuracy wise for a 55 - 68 gr bullet in the 223 Rem / 5.56 Nato. I bought some Win 748 but called my dealer and Im probably gonna take it back for something else. I want accuracy more than anything else. But I dont want anything where Compressed loads are only 2-3 grs out of starting loads. My rifle should be capable of shooting under .5" so I want something that'll make my rifle preform at its max.

My options are IMR 3031, IMR 4895, IMR 4831, H4895, H1000, H380, Varget, BLC-2, AA 2520, AA 2230, AA2460, and AA2015, AA5744, titegroup, WIN 760, RL 19, RL 10X and RL 15 (i think). I also reload for a 17 Rem. and would like the 223 powder to semi-work in it as well.

The "best" powder for .223 is the one that shoots well in your rifle, with your chosen bullet. I've used several of those you list over the years, but most frequently go with Varget or Benchmark these days,,,,,

hello...i "might" bet the farm that the 748 you picked up...& also reading this from your other thread this will most likely do the job...i admit i have become a benchmark guy as of late...shooting 55 grain nosler's & 50 grain v-max is my only experiance with that powder..i also like varget...i surely wouldn't return the w-748...give it a whirl...

I have been shooting Varget but u just can't stuff enough Varget in a Win. case to get the velocity up with the 55 gr setups. I have since decided to start using Benchmark. Hopefully the results will be positive.

Benckmark is what I use when I am not shooting W 748.I like em both but Benchmark seems to shoot more consistant groups at varied temps.

The only time I've come close, with W-748, to overfilling a .223 case was an odd PMC case that got into my batch. 28.2gr almost fills up a Federal case but then, I'm using 35gr bullets with that load.

The higher weights would require less powder. My 50gr requires 26.5gr and my 64gr bullets get along with 25.0gr... None come close to compressed loads.

40 and 50 grainers AA2015 is tough to beat in velocity and accuracy.

I like 335 and 748 50 to 65 grains.

Been shooting RL 15 for heavies.

But seems like the 223 shoot great with many powders, as long as the bullet weight matches the twist. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

W748 has been the most accurate in my AR so far with a lot of different bullet. I did get some great groups with Varget also.

purdygood...i agree with what ya say...i have not shot benchmark in extreme heat...i have shot group's in 15 degree..though..85 degree weather & the group's were pretty consistant...i can also say the same for w-748...p.o.i. was a "tad" off of course...

I use imr 4895 with 55grain rem psp's. Shoots 3/4 moa from my savage. The same powder with 46 grain win hp's shot clover leaves at 100 yards. I did not have much luck with win748.

H-380 works well for me with the 60 gr hp's by Sierria.
Blc-2 and AA-2230 are also great to meter and do well in accuracy with my 223's..
All three powders should work in the 17 as well++
