wondering what bullets i should load up in a marlin .45-70 guide gun for bear protection. up to grizzlies if i ever come across one. but mostly black bear. hornady has a 350g in round nose or flat poing, i dont know which would be better? or also speer has a 400g? those are my 2 choices pretty much unless theres something better out there, and how do the 325g hornady ftx with the plastic tip do?

Beartooth 525gr piledrivers i'm loading them with 42.0grs of IRM-3031 @1540fps from a 18 1/2" barrel.
Save the lite jacketed stuff for deer hunting.

The Hornady 350 gr. Interlock FP is pretty stout and would be the best choice of the three you listed. The Speer 400 gr. and the Hornady Flex Tip are soft bullets and would lack in penetration. Great for deer, but I wouldn't want to smack a big critter with either of them. All I know about big bears is what I read, but I'd want a heavy hard cast with a wide front on it for the chore you are describing.

I use the leverevolution (I am sure I spelled that wrong) If your looking for close range self defense find the biggest one you can, I have shot some black bears at close range with them and it does a great job, plus I have found that at longer ranges they are way more accurate then the round nose stuff.

just seen an add for the new barnes buster 400grain non expanding bullets. made for the .45-70 lever actions. anyone try these out or heard how they do?

super white hunter i have used them bullets on deer with great results i would say they would work well on bear. i wouldnt doubt u had good luck with that ammo i really like it ... but for me im not going to be picking about what type of ammo is the best for it because the best ammo they are for bear protection is the ammo you have on in the gun at that moment

Try SPEER 400 grain coupled with 50 grains of HODGENS 4198 and you will be impressed. But it may make you wince and your cheek sore!Just make sure your gun can take the abuse as well. The case wont show any signes of pressure.
