Best 9mm round for racoons

I have a little racoon issue that requires resolution. I currently carry a 9mm pistol and was wondering what 9mm cartridge would provide the best results in euthanizing the racoon mennace? The shots would be 50 feet or less.

Thanks,'
Doug

I would love to go all scientific and have some elongated helical theory based on actual nocturnal menace assassination but honestly believe any performance rated hollow point i.e. silvertips,,hydroshock, corbon, golden sabre, etc keep it fast (+P) and at least a 115gr or above in weight. placed strategically and surgically in the good stuff (chest area) or brain pan will settle any coon's hash........however, be prepared as they are impressively durable and would be fully prepared for a failure to stop drill(keep shooting) as they are a force to be reckoned with when "bent". They aren't dead until the little gleam goes out of their eyes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

A .22lr is an efficient cartrige for a coon. Unless it is some type of mutant menace; any 9mm round will do fine. Like TBN said, the hollow points will be best. But, I'm sure anything will work...those .22's (that work great) aren't mushrooming to .355".

Pecci,

My hunting partner and I use plain old solid remington lightnings in our 10/22's.

Seem to work real well on head shots. They seem to go through the skull better than HP's. Also, if you have to take a body shot with solid bullets, they make a smaller exit hole if they happen to go all the way through.

We use laser sights on our 22's, and they work AWESOME!!! Just put the laser on the critter and pull the trigger. A lot easier than trying to see crosshairs in a scope or open sights at 1 o'clock in the morning.

Works for us, my 2 cents,

I shot a racoon with a .45 acp hydro-shock 230gr from about 10 feet about a 20lb coon it turned and ran up a tree made me think i missed it made it about 30ft up and out on a limb then dropped .45 hole front to back found the bullet in the tree no exspanion at all.

NinjaDave,
Do you talk like that all the time? LOL

Lungbuster,
Yes, I do talk like that all the time (or at least when someone will let me) and in this forum any chance I get to make a comment I don't waste as I am among so many who put my knowledge base to shame it takes alot to step up unless I feel I know somethin' bout it.
Handguns and defensive ammunition are my thing and spend alot of personal time asking questions about their performance. Alas, it all boils down (everytime) to shot placement (and follow up).........or "A rose by any other name is still a hollow point (or something like that).
I'm just an enigma rolled in a mystery and wrapped with a hunk of bacon. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
nuff "spewing" for now,

I had a buddy turn loose his 7mm Rem Mag on a group of coons right at dark after he got mad watching them in his corn pile. He killed 3 and said that the 140gr game king was a pretty efficient bullet for coon sized game /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Pecci,
Any of the "brand name" hollowpoint bullets will pretty much render the same result. CCI Stingers seem to expand the most (32gr verses 40gr, with more push to boot). They are not as accurate in some guns. Stick with what you gun shoots best. I've never had a problem with penetration with HP's. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
