Personally, I think the Montana style is just fine. The jury is still out for me as sometimes, I find they can spook a coyote. Not all the time but certainly at times. My best success in running them has been the decoy right behind me and I’m tucked up at the bottom in its shadow. Other than that, it’s 100-150 yards to the downwind side and as visible as possible. A couple coyotes I shot this weekend were looking way past me at the decoy while coming in. They never even glanced at me before the end came.
Obviously, I won’t tuck in if the decoy is visible from the road and I have some flagging tape tied on just in case someone was to happen along and want to pop a shot.
For use of a prey decoy, I activate it intermittently. As said previous in your other thread, I try to hide it a bit and then just a couple of flicks here and there to catch their attention. A coax and a couple flicks is all it takes most times to get them focussed and coming on a string.
That’s just my own experience and I’m sure others will chime in who have volumes more time invested in using them.
