Best Fox hunting times

What time of night do you guys think is best for calling foxes. I have tried right after dark and into the wee hours of the morning, so far it seems we do better in the wee hours. Any theories????

I've had the best success later at night as well. Usually somewhere between 10p.m. and 2 a.m. is when I've had my best luck... of course it seems like some nights you get ran over and others you can't buy a break!

Something I've considered this year is sleeping in until about 1a.m. then getting up and hunting until daylight. By doing this i would be hunting a whole new part of the night with that "SPUNK" you start off with instead of being all down and out after 3-4 hours of fruitless calling. I'm wondering if the critters aren't moving better then... this seems to be a good way to find out.

we do good from about 7 pm- midnight, but if you get up early from 4 am till sunrise its very active, but im talking mostly reds and grays not yotes. Anytime before or after big snow is always good.

Last weekend we called in a Grey fox at about 2:30 am. We called it in ina aspot where we have had productive yote responses earlier in the evening.

I've had success at all hours. However, here is something that I noticed last season...

As soon as it turns dark to the point where if you did not have a light system (and you would have to go home as a result)the fox really seem to move. Even after an unsuccessful dusk calling set up. I stay put. When darkness sets, I wait a few minutes then hit the call again. It's amazing how many times the eyes glow and the fox come right in. If I had no lights, I'd be heading for the truck and missing out on some hot calling action.

This being said, I also score a lot between 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM.

I really believe that any time you are out there and a critter is in the vacinity, he will check you out and then THAT IS THE MAGIC TIME!

We do our best from 10:00pm till daylight with the most active responces being from 12:00 till 4:30am.....I keep good records! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Jbh,

We did that alot last year, we would start out hunts at 12:00am (midnight) and call right threw the best morning calling. Usualy give out around 11:00am the next day! Makes it more fun to start the night with some sleep. When I work second shift we meet here at the plant and start at 11:30 and hunt till 4:00 am. Plus it lets all the road trafic die down to. Seems to work well here.

What calls are you using. I have great sucess with grey fox pup on greys and reds. Had a double one night by myself. Got one and missed the second. It was a neat thing- did get me concerned because the were split up and after I shot one had a hard time finding the second ones eyes- I hit him back and boy did he squeell. Made even more noise. but missed the other.

I run the grey fox pup tape some and do well with it. I do my best with high pitched bird sounds for fox. I start my stands with hand calls ( Bird destress) and finish with the grey fox pup tape. I like the grey fox pup tape for greys but dont call many reds with it.

i think gooseman will verify that the best time to call is when his partner has the light, if i had a dollar for every fox we called in on myshot, id bet i couldnt buy a box of .22 shells. haha aint that right dad. but with that bieng said, im going to say based on everyones posts and others opinions 2-4 am bieng the prime time??

What about a full moon vs. dark skies for hunting fox? Is one better than the other? After last week's fox that came in to my bird distress sounds, I have become quite interested in calling foxes.

i call with keekee alot dark nights are best to me it seems like they see you to well when the moon is bright. the darker the better!!!

Swift One,

I love the bird destress! I blow it alot. For fox its either bird destress or grey fox pup, those two are top on my list for sure.

I will call on a full moon but I always try to keep some kind of cover to my back. You get busted more on a full moon for sure. But it dont keep me from calling if thats the night I got off and can call. It dont seem to effect the way they respond.

I have noticed the coyotes are very mobile during the full moons or "fuller" moons lately... still no patterning on foxes but they can see better with the extra moonlight.
