was thinking about getting into trapping next year and was wondering what are some of the best instructional/reference books out there? what about dvd's? thanks for all the help and good luck to all

You will learn the most by getting out there and getting some experience, trying different things and making mistakes and learning from them.
Second best is like redfox said, get out with an experienced trapper. That's also how I got into trapping in the first place.
There are a ton of books and videos out there, depending on what you want to trap. I would definitely suggest you get a subscription to The Trapper and predator caller and/or Fur Fish Game.

A very good book is called "Trapping North Americain Furbearers" by S.Stanley Hawbaker. It describes tons of different sets and how to trap every type of furbearer on this continent. Don't know of any DVD's off hand, but this book is well written and the auther keeps it interesting. I agree that getting out there and learning on your own or learning from an experienced trapper is the best way, but sometimes it ain't allways possible. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Hoofbeats of a wolfer is a good book, but not for beginners as you can read it but much won't make sense until you get out and really pursue coyotes and then things will start to click from that book.

A basic sets,lure/urine useage type book or video is great for a beginner. JC Conners videos are good, many good trapping books on the market from many people. Mirandas trapping fox or coyote books are good beginners books.Hawbakers and many others out there. Pick a species and then buy a book or two and a good video. John G six days with a long liner is a good beginner video as well. Many good videos as well too many to list for a beginning trapper.

if you haven't done much skinning i would recommend --practical fur handling -- it is a good dvd that explains the skinning process very thoroughly . But you cant beat a hands on experience with a seasoned vet.
