Best Long Range Cartridges for Coyotes??

At 4-700yds, not many chamberings will "destroy" pelts, Sept for heavy magnums.

Having said that, the 6 bore is where it's at for long range coyotes. It just plain works. The quarter bore is great also for out there dogs.

Thanks!

260 remington with a solid core bullet.

I have had decent luck running heavy 22 caliber such as the 75 or 80gr AMax bullets in a fast twist barrel. My barrel is a 1/8 twist chambered in 22 Creedmoor and I feel its quite capable at those ranges. 22/243 or 22-250 AI will be good choices as well. Of course that is if you reload if not its 6mm and I would look at 75 Gr VMax in 243 which is available in factory loads.

6x47 Lapua with a 105 Berger VLD.

If I was going to have a dedicated long range rifle it would be in the 6.5 creedmoor. Load it with a 140gr Berger Match VLD (BC .612) or a 140 gr match hybrid target (bc .618). And if you don't reload there are a few manufacturers that make ammo for it like Hornady, Winchester, and Nosler. But don't over look the .243

Easiest would be a .243 with 95gr Berger vld or a .260 with a 120 grain bullet if you're using a factory rifle. If it's a custom barrel with a tighter twist then I would still choose a .243 with Berger 105's or a 260 with Berger 130 or 140's.

I just had a custom long range coyote rifle built. I went with the standard 22-243 Winchester. It was recommended by a fellow PM member.
I got my first kill with it yesterday. Not exactly long range at only 209yds, but I'll say the 75gr Amax at 3640fps (muzzle) (3166 @ 209yds) dumped him HARD!

This is going to be a great one, going to hear some good stories from this I am sure!

6 Creed is also a great one!

Long range for me has been 450-500 yards and those shots were rare.

Good luck you Long Rangers!

At that range you are probably going to have to deal with drop and windage in all but the most pristine condidtions. That being said I've used a 308 for almost everything for a long time, and the avalable dope and balistics on the good ol 168 mk is abundant. Very consistant at those ranges. As for pelts...lol well it goes one way or the other. It either zipps through with little pelt damage, or it looks like a grenade went off inside the yote. Not a pelt guy myself, more of the red mist type. On a more practical note, the .243 win is probably more suited for yotes at that range.

For what you want my choice would be one of the following, 243, 25-06 or .260.

Notice you live in OH as I do. Be careful what you use for bullets. For coyote or other varmints I use varmint bullets and not heavy target bullets. You don't want a bullet to ricochet and hit something not intended. A varmint bullet is made to disintegrate on impact and are extremely accurate.

.243 with 87 grain Vmax would get my vote. At long range I don't know that I'd want a hunting bullet designed for deer on a soft target like a coyote. It may not expand right at that distance and zip right through. I'm pretty confident a Vmax would still open up nicely.

I would think that whatever you can hit a coyote with at 400-700yrds with would be the best.

Most major popular calibers won't tear up hides at that range. I would bet that a 308 wouldn't tear up a hide at those ranges..

Use a 243 on a coyote under 100yrds and that is a lot different conversation.

I guess my point is, if you go into a bigger sports store and look at the shelves, (some of them) have at least 1/3rd of their choices as something that would work for Coyotes. There are a pile of choices, and almost everyone here will give you a different answer. I don't think you could get them to all agree on a single weight bullet in a fixed caliber, and it's all over if you ask about manufacture.

The challenges you are facing is getting a bullet that is going to give you sub MOA accuracy, something that will carry the energy needed, or deliver all it's got on impact, and something that isn't going to rip up hides.
That's tough, since to get it out there, it has to be moving, so that means that your tearing up any close up shots of under 100yrds. That also means that you have to think about the type of bullet you want. I like Vmax or simular bullets, others don't. If i shoot a coyote at 500yrds, I want him to drop dead.. Right there.. Called DRT. I don't want to walk out 500yrds and then search all over for a coyote too, that ran off and died somewhere. I can promise you that if a coyote runs on you, and you don't see it drop or roll, it's gonna die under a bush or in a hole or something that makes it a pain to find.

I like a fast caliber, flat shooter, and carry a shotgun too. I can reach out as far as i feel comfortable, and at under 300yrds i don't have enough drop to need to really adjust my hold over. 500yrds is about 15" of hold over. THe shotgun has BB 3" shells and handles anything inside of 50yrds.
Good luck.
