Best Scope for the $$$??????

Hunter00

Just sent the money for a NEW varmint rifle. Remington model 700 VSSF .22-250 (original, not II). I am on a budget for the optics cause I spent more on the gun than originally planned. I am looking to spend around $250-$300, $350 maybe. Where and what is the best scope for that kind of money?

I will be doing some PD and predator hunting with it. I want something in the range of 6-18 power. Minimum power not more than 6 and max not less than 18.

Also, this is my first synthetic stainless gun, do I want the scope black or silver? I think a matte(non-gloss) finish is a must, or not? Any suggestions???

Thanks -Ron

Look at Sightron, or Mueller, both are had to beat for the money. All my stainless guns wear black matt scopes and I don't care that they clash, if they get used for coyotes they might get painted anyway. Check on the Pro Hunter series by Simmions also.

Anything not made in CHINA. Any money going to China will haunt us someday when we fight their military which is financed by US desires for bargains! If you do not believe it read their press statements for a month or two.

That said, I like used Burris in excellent condition and some of the older Jap scopes of B&L or Denver Redfields.

I have a Mueller 4-16x50mm Sport Dot, and for the $180
I paid for it, it is a very good value. I think the price has
gone up a bit. At least the sites I saw it at, show the price
at $209.99. If the 50mm objective is a problem, or you
want to hunt in wet conditions, then I would opt for
the Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15x40. The Optic Zone shows
it for $259. The 3200s are very clear and bright, and have
Rainguard. This is an excellent feature, for hunting in
precipitation. For me personally, unless I really wanted
a illuminated dot scope, I would purchase the Bushnell
scope, since the Mueller has crept up in price to with in
$50 of the 3200 Elite. I have Leupolds, Nikons, a Weaver,
a Mueller, a Bushnell Elite 4200, and a Bushnell 3200, and
of all of these scopes, the Bushnell impress me the most.
At their price point, the 3200 is a great value. I am looking
hard at the 3200 in 3-10x40, for one of my AR-15s. One will
be on order, as soon as the gun slush fund gets to the
purchase price.

used burris signature series, even if it is the older series.

I find there to be NO bargains in optics. Some day, your cheap scopes will go bad, and you will know why they cost so little. Buy used products from higher end manuf before you buy a NIB cheapie. JMHO,..I only have a few lower end scopes left to be swapped out.

I have a Leupold VXII 4x12x40, Sightron SII 4x16x4?, Meuller 8.25x25x44. All are Mil-Dot scopes and this is the order I like them. The latter 2 are good scopes but the Leupy is far better to my eyes. If I was buying a 6x18 I would buy a VXII 6x18 Leupold, about 450 dollars. Nikons look very clear but I would have to shoot one for awhile to see if they compared favorably to my Leupy.. JMO LP

I'm afraid to use a more expensive scope than this because usually when you step up your'e ruined, the lesser quality scopes don't work for you anymore. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I am partial to Burris/Pentax. If you watch around you can pick-up 4x16, 6x24 and sometimes 8x32 signatures for just over $300 on like new used items. My 6x24 Pentax lightseeker was $250 NIB when a big outfitter closed some out. There are usually great bargins on ebay if you do the research.

Nikon gets my vote for that price range. I bought a Nikon
Buckmaster mil dot 40mm 4.5x14 Side Focus for $256. Love this scope it is sooo Clear. I own Leupold and Burris as well but for the price and side focus you can't beat it. Was drilling prairie dogs at 300yds. on Monday with my AR, what a blast. This website has some 6x18 scopes as well.

i use the bushnell banner series in 50 mm a.o. i have used this scope on everything from .204 (newest one) to a winchester 300 win mag model 70(oldest one), and never had a problem with them. they are clear, 6x18 power, and hold adjustments! at 130 bucks i cant complain abit! just my 2 cents. happy hunting.

I'd go with a Leupold, it's fantastic and you can beat the lifetime warranty...you can pick one up at walmart for 199. I've always heard you should buy a scope that's about the same price/value of your rifle. Then again...I have a $700 rifle and a $200 scope.

I am really leaning toward the Nikon BuckMaster with the side focus or the Bushnell Elite. I have had great luck with my other Nikon and love it. Is the side focus easier to use than objective?

Does anyone have experience with the Cabelas Alaskan Guide scopes. They are at a reasonable price but, are they any good?
