i tried night hunting for the first time tonight and see where a shooting aid would be extremely helpful. i saw a telescopic stick at [beeep]'s sporting goods that might be helpful has anyone tried these? i know there are shooting sticks out there but didn't know about the telescopic type. any feedback would be appreciated.

I use a set that I made from two broom sticks with a bolt about 6" from the top. I have a strap at the top to limit them form opening too far, they work awesome and are really stable. But if you are looking to buy a set, get the stoney points. My partners use the long ones, and they rock. Best out there as far as I'm concerned...

Home made jobbers will work fine. Broomsticks, dowles, whatever. I just recently got a set of stoney points, the camo ones. They seem to be well made and work great. Alot easier then carrying around solid sticks.

I am sure the sticks you were looking at are nice, but homemade ones work just fine, and are usually way cheaper.
I was bored over the last weekend so i decided to make some shooting sticks of my own. Right now there is snow on the ground here, so i did a snow camo pattern. I used 1/2 inch dowels, sprayed them black, taped off a "pattern" and then sprayed white over it. I used little black rubber rings, but i heard that castration bands will work good too.
Total cost: about 5 bucks

Here they are:

Get a Stoney Point. Tried my buddies and immediately went out and bought myself a long set. The telescoping feature is very nice for sitting or prone.

Done the Dowel Rod thing and they work. Recently bought a pair of Predator Snyper (tri) sticks (advertiser here) and they are 10x better. However, I would not buy them again from personal experience with the company. I think it's an item that's worth making a purchase on. DIY projects might work but they will not be as good as a professionaly made product.

You should check out making your own with Varmint Al's instructions for "Bi-Fur-Pod".

I made a set and they work very nice. Bought some 3/4"x3/4"x36" hardwood sticks from HomeDepot for about $2 each. Some guys are taking the basic idea and modifying it a bit, using aluminum rods or even graphite arrow blanks. You'll get the basic idea and be able to come up with something that exactly suits your needs.

peace.

Any of you use Stoney Point's monopods? I use their Shooting Stix but was considering the monopod with the swiveling Yoke on top. It seems these would be better.

Lost my Stoney Points walking to my last stand this evening. It's worth the 110 mile round trip tomorrow to go find them!
Bought a pair of the Predator Sniper Styx at the Eastern Outdoor show in Harrisburg last winter..some guy was hawking them at what seemed to be a decent price, at the time. What a PITA! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif They weren't so bad after some modification, though. I wouldn't buy another set at half the price! YMMV.....

+1 for the homemade sticks... they work perfectly!

I basicly did my own version of Varmint Al's BiFurPod...

I used a piece of 1 1/2" pine furring strip, ripped it in half on the tablesaw, then took a 1/4-20 screw with a wing nut to join the 2 sticks together about 6 inches down from the end. Also drove some 8d finishing nails into the bottom ends of the sticks to give them some "bite" into the ground for stability.

To cushion the rifle, I cut pieces of an old leather belt and used contact cement to glue it to the sticks. Put on my own camo paint job...

Total cost: FREE... I just used scraps and materials that I already had laying around the house and in my workshop...

The pine wood is plenty strong and light weight, and cheap. I've not broken mine yet, and I've been using my original pair for going on 4 or 5 years now...

Build your own, you can customize and modify it to your individual needs, and you can't beat the price!
