Best skinning knives

What are some of the best skinning knives out there? I know I'm probably going to have to spend quite a bit on a nice set of knives but figure that they will pay off in the long run. My buddy says that Knives of Alaska work really well but have read a lot of comments on how they don't hold there edge very well. I'm looking for a set of knives that will last me a long time and that will hold their edge very well or are at least very easy to sharpen and can be used on both big game and small game. Any ideas? Thanks for any help!

hold edge a long time and easy to sharpen usually dont go together very well.
Alittle sharpening skill goes along way as to how well a knife preforms.

I use my old timer pocket knife for everything from coyotes to big bull elk.
Sharpens up like a razor, and holds it very well.

The main thing to look for in a really good knife is the quality of the steel, all stainless is junk. A good high carbon steel blade is far superior, takes a much sharper edge and holds it longer than stainless. The blade should also be of the hollow ground design to allow a proper sharpening.

I like my kodiak knifes , they hold a good edge and work great. I also love scalpals (the same as the doctors use) They have a bunch of different sizes, they are very cheap and disposable. As soon as they dull just snap them off and slap another one on. they work realy great for skinning out the paws and doing the head, all those hard to get at places.

I would advise buying a custom from someone who forges carbon steel that is well regarded. You get what you pay for!

Ive used one of the Knives of Alaska cubs as well. I think it is one of the best skinning knives Ive found yet. It holds an edge really well, the handle is still easy to grip wearing latex gloves and Id swear its like having a zipper on skinning things out.

The real bonus for me was the fine tip on the knife, it makes the wet work around the face, ears and eyes MUCH easier for me to do and not spending all night doing it.

Got it for about $50 if I remember correctly. Money well invested.

I just purchased a forged hunter from 5160 from Mastersmith Jerry Liarson and this is the best working knife I've ever had in my hand! And as a plus the workmanship is flawless to my eye.

I heard the Dunn knives hold the edge a long, long time. A 100$ or more for each one. I use an old meat cutting knife. It is narrow enough to use to split the tail skin open.T.20
