which gun is better for a first rifle, ruger american, tc venture, savage, or another? I'm on a somewhat of a budget but want to get my 15 yr old son his own gun.

Of those, I'd go with the Ruger.

Look at the Howa package deal too, it comes with Youth and Adult stocks.

OR a Rem 700 youth, then update the stock in the future.

At any rate, the .243 win is a great chambering that will serve them well.

Very true!

I always have to ask when I am selling products. To some "not a lot of money" is $300-500 for a set of binos. Others, price isn't a factor. And others just want a blister pack Bushnell's.

I think the Venture is guaranteed to shoot 1 MOA. Of course, the savage will do that also, if you don't mind the looks of a savage.

The Ruger American Rifle is a good shooting rifle. You might also check on those Walmart Remington M700 SPS models. Last year they ran them for about $350 if I remember correctly, basically the same price as many of the inexpensive budget rifles. A short action M700 gives a ton of options for your son in later years. He could restock, refinish, new trigger, new barrel and customize that action for a lifetime.

Another vote for tc venture, especially in camo. 243 good choice imho.
My hunt'n buddy already had a couple tc's, then noticed a super deal on 22-250 in camo & he got one more.
We were both lacking a 22-250 at the time.
I jumped on the same deal and am really like'n it.
May still be a 75 $ rebate, not sure.

I like Tikka's but you have mentioned some popular makes.
Of those I think Ruger Americans have proved out and seem to have a good warranty backing that has been honored in a timely manner.
It is amazing to me how inexpensive entry level rifles have gotten.

Ruger American Predator. I have one in 6.5 creedmoor and it is a 1/2 inch shooter. I have heard good things from other people on the Ruger American Predator also.

I don't know anything at all about the Ruger, but GC is dead nuts correct on the Wally World SPS.

+1

For a starter rifle how could you beat a Savage Axis? Cabellas now has them in most all cals for $219.99 with the Savage rebate. With a little half decent glass you will have a real shooter for under $350.00
