Just curious, what is the best time of year to hunt prairie dogs? Seems that summer months might be pretty hot in the Western states. Is there a "best" time?

Butchloc, thanks for the tip about May and the grass being short at that time.

Pd buster, I never considered that hunting in snow could be a good and fun time for prairie dogs, but after pondering it for a minute, I guess the fat little buggers like to come out and sun.

And so, any time goes, right!? One time of year is about as productive as another?

I've only shot prairie dogs one time, and that was in October 1999 while we were in Wyoming on a mule deer hunt. We didn't draw antelope tags that year, so that allowed us extra time and gave me an opportunity to do something I've wanted to do for years. We had a "blast" literally. We shot most of them with a Ruger #1 .218 Bee and 40 gr.V-Max all the way out to 225 yards. Not very far, but considering the equipment we had, it was. Was a lot of fun, and would like to do it again some time.

Good Shooting.

This was my very first Prairie Dog, shot with
a Remington 541-s 22 long rifle.

Depends on where you are shooting. In the SD area's, first week in May. When you move up to WY or MT, June is a better bet. Usually like to be there about the 2 or 3 week in June.

Hey Cmiddleton,

Where is Mills, Wyoming? We hunted near Kaycee. And yep, enough "buddits" is a good thing. We certainly went through them fast enough. I'd like to try that again some time.
