BEST TRAP FOR COYOTE

Fellas;
It's been 20 years since I set a trap for ANYTHING but recently purchased a small farm with LOTS of coyotes. I purchased two #3 Victors but had to do a lot of tweeking to the pan for the trap to spring. The pan was hitting the bottom of the trap without springing closed.

I bought the victors beacuse I had success with them as a teenager. BUT checking Ebay and some other sources I see a lot of "new" brands.

Any thoughts on the BEST coyote trap. BTW I can't use snares.

I use 1 3/4 Duke round jaw traps. They work great for fox or coyote. Any factory trap that you use should be modified.

1. Move chain from side and mount under pan in center.

2. Add in line swivel to chain.

3. Tack weld the end of jaws so they can not pop out.

4. Use cable stakes

It's amazing what a coyote can do to a trap that's setup improper...

Let me know if I can be of further help. I'm probably not that far away and have trapped many coyotes. Take a look further down in post Highlights of trapping season.

I like the new #3Montana.They are strong and have rounded edge jaws that dont cut.I bottom swivel mine,and heres a pic of a backfoot 2 toed catch in one from this fall,I had the pan tension a little light.There dog-less too.

With the extra big coyotes you have there you should use nothing smaller than a #3. The best trap on the market for the price is the #3 Bridger. I would recommen buying them all already tricked out or if you weld do it yourself. The Canadian modification is the best modification. That is lamination on the outside and inside of the jaws. a heavy duty base plate, center swiveled, !/2 inch off set lugs, 2 to 3 foot of chain, 4 colied and the jaw tips bubbled. I guarantee even with the size of your coyotes that this trap modified like this will hold every coyote that you catch especially with your short trap check laws

I use #3 Montgomery Dogless on Coyotes and Cats. I have no problems with them... Excellent Traps. The best ever made in my mind. I guess the Montanas are the same thing just a new remake. I have caught several dogs in #2s but I like #3s.

Without a doubt, #4 Newhouse, double springed, pan spring, file the dog flush to stop pan travel, 15' of triple swilveled chain and a sharp drag........a little pee and scat and you'll have one in the morning!

gotta watch that pan travel............or you'll see those toes in the jaws instead of a whole coyote!
