Best way to cut foam in a gun case?

I have several rifles that I know aren't going to be replaced or traded, and I am considering buying hard cases and cutting the foam to fit the individual weapons. I've cut foam before for camera cases with carpet knives or scissors, and honestly it looked like crap. Anybody have any expertise in this field or know how to cut the stuff and make it look "factory" or at least acceptable?

Pelican reccomends using an electric carving knife. I didn't have one and used a long, sharp bread knife. It worked OK and it looks pretty good while the rifle in the case but it's a little ragged looking empty. I would think the electric route would get a smoother, better looking cut.

If you don't want to build an electric hot wire knife, and you can get the foam in the freezer, it will help stabilize the foam when cutting it with an electric knife.

Making an exact template of the object (weapon, camera, etc.) helps a lot too..

Most of my hard cases came with that darn pluck foam and I'm trying to locate some reasonably priced closed cell foam sheets.

The neighboring shop to mine is a Trim shop. They cut a mile of foam a week for seats and upholstery. They use plain old electric fish filet knives. They buy the cheap ones from Wally world.
 
What RC said! LOL!!! Also, hope you are not going to store those guns in the cases? Makes for real rusty firearms.

Naw...I've been doing this for a while. The weapons stay in the safe unless they're being used.
